Imo, he's not fake.

He stayed loyal to all his friends, and he didnt put an act, well he couldnt of for that amount of time.

When Wendy said it, Stu had his hands over his face looking really sad, and said "Just a little harsh" and laughed.

But Wendy slagged most of the Hms eg. Rex, Nicole, Sara ect...

He was not using his daighter for anything. He loves her with all his heart, Im thinking he is a good dad, a daughter wouldnt send a bad dad a card saying that they loved them, and his ex seemed to agree to the fact of Mia sending Stu the letter.
