Is The United Kingdom Still United?

Are we, as a nation, still as united as we once were?

Locke. 14-09-2008 03:13 AM

Were we ever?

I don't like to generalise, but a very high percentage of people living in Wales hate the English... and it's not as if it's a bit of a joke, it's general dislike. Living in Wales, and being English myself, is rather interesting, and I ask my friends if they like the English and they say no and come up with petty insults because they're "up themselves" apparently? I'm not saying everyone thinks it, but quite a lot of people.

Imo, it's a bitter jealousy. Having said that, not many countries in the UK like each other.. but still I think overall as the UK, we're quite united even if we hate each other at times?

Llamajohn 14-09-2008 10:09 AM

No...we were about 200 years ago perhaps..now its all a mess :D

Scotland inparticular seem to want to distance themselves from us all.

Bring back the Commonwealth and slave trade I say!

How'd you figure out that one brainiac

Of course the UK isn't united.

Scotland - Most of the country wants to be 100% independent.

Northern Ireland - More 50/50. A lot of people think it would be better to be part of Ireland as the government's run much smoother and everyone has more money generally. 40 years of full scale rioting over UK/Ireland says it all.

Wales - Don't know much about the situation, but reading this thread makes it look pretty much the same as Scotland & NI.

KKBL 14-09-2008 11:51 AM

altough ROI isnt part of the UK anymore...everyone here hates England yet loves Wales & Scotland.its realy stupid but true.i can imagine its the same in Wales & Scotland.

Shaun 14-09-2008 05:12 PM

No, it isn't really. I'm proud to be British though, I don't like to say I'm 'English'. I support all 4 home nations with the football/rugby, and Team GB with the Olympics...

But the general consensus is the age-old "everyone hates the English" thing.

Ross 14-09-2008 05:31 PM

Personally, I dislike England. I don't dislike the people in it and I wouldn't say their stuck-up or whatever, I just generally dislike England.

I want Wales to have their own independance, we're the same as N.I & Scotland. I just sometimes wish Wales would sort of split from England and float over and join to Ireland.

Sophii3x 14-09-2008 05:40 PM

I don't really think so. It's always been England vs. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

And I completly agree with Ross.

Because your country is larger than Scotland, Wales and Ireland, and has more people living in it.

Sticks 15-09-2008 08:00 AM

Constitutionaly we are united, and stronger for it.

Were the seperatists to have their way, we would far be poorer.

As for independent in Europe, well, if Scotland were to split from the UK, it would mean leaving Europe as it is the UK which has membership and applying seperately to join, and there are other states waiting to Join.

Scotland would be left out in the cold.

Wales can not go UDI, because it was conquered, unlike Scotland which joined the union in 1707

It's ignorant comments like that are the reason people hate England, not just in Ireland, Wales and Scotland either. What have you achieved that is so great exactly? It was Welsh coal that kick-started the Industrial Revolution and made British Empire the biggest in the world.

As for the EU, the sooner we're out of that, the better.

Its natural group behaviour to dislike a group that has a seemingly higher status than another. If you're in a marginalised group you hate the "in" group! With a recession coming up and more ethnic groups around, theres going to be a battle for resources and like it or not groups will come into conflict. It would be nice for people not to see each other in terms of ethnicity, but thats the reality. So we are tenuously united when the going good...

NettoSuperstar! 16-09-2008 02:54 PM

...for the united Kingdom to be united there needs to be more of an open debate into the reasons why people feel marginalised and some kind of dialogue between groups so that we understand each other better and the reasons why we behave in prejudiced ways! School would be a good place to discuss these things...but then the kids go back to the parents who have different ideals! Hell I dont know but education is needed, amongst other things

Ruth 19-09-2008 05:07 PM

United Kingdom hasn't been united for a long long time.
