Christmas TOTP Axed by the BBC and Simon Cowell\'s offer rejected

IT’S been an annual tradition for the past 43 years.

Turkey, Brussels sprouts, a minor family row and the Top Of The Pops Christmas Special.

But now BBC Scrooges are axing the iconic show.

A festive telly schedule without the Pops is like Christmas pud without brandy butter — bland and stodgy.

BBC top brass pulled the plug on the weekly TOTP in July 2006.

But the Christmas Day shows were continued so well-fed viewers could find out who had won the year’s biggest chart battle.

Last year a sterling line-up including KAISER CHIEFS, GIRLS ALOUD, THE PROCLAIMERS and KATE NASH kept the flame alive.

Not so sure about this decision ...

I always enjoy watching it, what a crap decision. It was bad enough they did away with the weekly show, now this

:cloud: Simon Cowell should surely take some responsibility for his yearly hijacking of the Christmas No 1.

NettoSuperstar! 28-10-2008 02:02 PM

Booooooooo

Jake! 28-10-2008 02:03 PM

Then I think BB2 should have it on for those who do watch it.

So he should that nasty monopolising smug git.

Monopolising the number 1 spot every christmas.

What if Cliff Richard fancied his chances?

Nooooooooooooooooooo
canmt believe ittttttttttt

Magic 28-10-2008 08:49 PM

So annoyed, now I can make a proper thread.
Why? At the end of the day its cheap, and a land mark show, didn't deserve to be knocked off. It would of suited BBC2 and 3.

Callum 28-10-2008 08:50 PM

I read about this last week, is a shame.

You have to.

Its printed in the "currant bun"

*Thats cockney rhyming slang for "sun"*

Thought I'd say just in case you thought it was a crazy typo error.

YAY! Great news! :dance2:

Dan_ 29-10-2008 11:56 AM

Good on Simon

Magic 29-10-2008 07:31 PM

YES!
I ACTUALLT LOVE SIMON!

Tom 30-10-2008 03:03 PM

He's confirmed it on video now, he may have approached the BBC today. He wants to take the show to ITV and with the power Cowell has over ITV I'd be more surprised if ITV said no than yes. Its just a case of whether the BBC will let Simon have it or not.

Whats the point of getting rid of it, blatenl so they canput on another classic christmas film that no one bothers watching anymore...

MarkWaldorf 30-10-2008 03:05 PM

Is this just for the Christmas special, or for it to come back weekly?

The way he's going on about it I'd actually say weekly ...

I think doing it monthly could work in todays TV environment, the biggest selling songs of the month.

Callum 30-10-2008 03:10 PM

Glad Simon's doing this, I hope it comes back weekly.
