The same company had weekend training courses that were close to compulsory to attend. It was a very forward thinking company in its time, but it just wasn't suitable for anyone with a life outside of work, and Netflix sounds like it's taken that to the next level.

I could see mgmt treating people who try to take time off during/around scheduled trips/conferences as a major "faux pas".
"You didn't seem as enthusiastic this month about work outside of work as you did last month, Mike... Gosh, we're just not that into you anymore... *shows them the door*"
