A 12 year old doesn't have anything close to a full adult understanding of basic consequences, let alone the ability to comprehend adult sexual relationships or the complexities / legality of the age of consent. That's WHY the age of consent exists in the first place... it's the adult's responsibility... and "well she said..." isn't a valid excuse because if there is ANY doubt about age it's the adult's responsibility to either be sure or to just not go there.

I would say there are exceptional circumstances when teenagers at say 15 look MUCH older like 25+, which does happen. But courts assess these things. I think reading between the lines, law officials have looked seen the girl and thought "No she does not look 19, whether she said she was or not".
