I don't necessarily agree with cold-hard-cash generational inherited debt, however, in this case as the family is still occupying the land, I think it would be reasonable enough to ask that it's given back. If it was going to cause huge financial issues then that would be another matter - but I suspect he could give the land back and still be a very wealthy chap.

Exactly. This logic of "oh but it was legal at the time" bull**** pisses me off as well, especially when it's one country exploiting a poorer/less developed country, countries that couldn't defend themselves properly. It being legal at the time is just bull****.
