It is possible that the dog was mistreated which led to it feeling threatened in this scenario, however its also possible that it was treated fine and still attacked. Animals don't have the same moral compass as humans, they're animals.

Some dogs attack for fun, huskys are renowned for attacking other animals, plus I had a collie a few years ago who loved to chase after rabbits, mice, rats, birds even, he just had a strong hunt instinct
