"Shameful" isn't OTT at all as a description of how British politicians and the British public treat healthcare professionals.
I'm not referring to the clapping at the time as shameful - that was just silly hive mind nonsense, I doubt anyone who did it gave it more than an ounce of thought.
The fact that the same people who were stood banging tubs completely turned on those same people they were clapping for as soon as they said "hey maybe pay us fairly" - that is shameful. No other word for it.
But as we've discovered no one was clapping for the NHS after all, they were clapping for themselves and their neighbours. Parmy and Zizu said so.

The public haven't had much of a say in that tbf. We haven't had an election since 2019 and it looks like the current gov are going to be totally annihilated the first chance the public has had. Support for various strike action has been fairly high across much of the country as well.
I think you're overly harsh on the public, it's not exactly been sunshine and rainbows for most people ever since the pandemic
