Definitely the early stuff, but not so much when Robert Smith gained pop sensibility. I don't think looking goth cuts the mustard Or bands that simply have goth fans.. I think a band has to be pretty deliberately goth .
A lot of Goths do listen to some depeche mode. The stuff around Black Celebration and some of Music for the Masses and I'd say a lot of Violator is Goth like and so Songs of Faith and Devotion too.

They lost a lot of that when Alan Wilder left.
