And why would any religion want their children to grow up so quickly. Childhood is precious - and provides a solid foundation for healthy emotional growth - and is most likely to produce well balanced adults.

I dont think its meant to mean at age 12 the young person is suddenly an adult rather its about that age that the young person becomes more mature, more able to make adult decisions, to start becoming more responsible. Obviously if the 13 year old decided to drop out of school or make simialar decisions they would be treated in a more mature way but still wouldnt be allowed full control of their lives.
