What you're describing is astral projection, or an out of body experience. I used to have these quite a bit when I was younger, but not for many years now. It can be quite unnerving to suddenly see yourself as a separate entity though it is usually only instantaneous as the minute you realise, you are straight back in your body. No doubt there's a rational explanation for that too, but it is spooky.
