It was a failure of the Italian justice system, but thankfully the Italian justice system has a much more legitimate appeals process. in fact the appeal was more professionally executed than the original trial. imo.
It's also important to remember that itally has the exact opposite justice system to the US and UK, in that you are presumed guilty until proven innocent.

I'm not claiming it was a conspiracy either, I just think there wasn't enough evidence to be sure and the Italian police made serious mistakes during their investigation so they couldn't be 100% confident to uphold the verdict, but I don't rule out the possibility that she did do it, the Kercher family are still waiting for justice and still don't know what happened that night
