Well the benefit Warne got from the strength of the Aussie's line up at least balances out Murali's advantage from playing in more spin friendly conditions, like you said you almost put McGrath in the poll but Sri Lanka didn't have any bowlers near his level to support Murali. The Aussies could just have McGrath and Gillespie take the wickets off most of the top order and then Shane just comes in and bowls at the rabbits, Murali had to do most of it by himself
Murali has bowled just under 7340 overs, 800 wickets at an average of 22.72
Warne has bowled 6784 overs, 708 wickets at an average of 25.41
That's in tests of course, can't be bothered to compare for other formats, pretty close but Murali edges it
