Yeah reality is you can never completely eliminate risk really, apparently there had only ever been 100 cases of the 'vertebral artery dissection' which caused the injury
Cricket helmets are improving all the time though, wasn't even that long ago that a lot of batsmen would come up against the fastest bowlers in the world without wearing one. One of the effects of improved helmets is that batsman are less cautious against the short ball now though, they can afford to be a lot more aggressive against a 90mph bouncer at their heads. Again though this is such a freak incident its hard to draw too many conclusions from it
