These crimes have a devastating impact on old people who mostly never recover from such a traumatic event. I would even go as far as arguing that these so called mitigating factors used by defence teams to elicit lighter sentences and reduced fines should in fact be viewed as Aggravating factors and the perpetrator if disclosing stories like these should in fact receive a longer sentence.
Reason being , coming from a disadvantaged background and having first hand knowledge of hardship and violence should in fact be MORE reasons not to repeat that kind of behaviour.
Either way it should not be used to mitigate crimes like these, used to overshadow the crime itself and overshadow the rights of the victims.
I think the Justice system has lost it's way a little since everyone has a choice whether they commit crime or not.
If you do then you should accept the full consequences/punishment that the law demands irrespective of any hard luck/sob story.
People need to take responsibility for their actions and not just expect a watered down, wishy washy, bleedin heart Liberal Justice system to let them off the hook with a slap on the wrists and a small fine or for more serious crimes a month's stay in 5 star prison and then the hardship of having to wear an electronic tag.
