I don't think that's true, domesticated cats who have had a stable home for years don't suddenly decide to go out to the wild. If anything cats are very territorial and protective of their turf.
They are known to go away to die but I wouldn't get too worried unless they don't appear for longer than 24 hours, they're pretty resilient animals as well
