This is the important part, really. My guess would be that he downed one of those large 750ml bottles of Red Bull style energy drink, and it's the speed of consumption that's the problem rather than the amount... his body simply couldn't process it quickly enough.
There's also very little testing done on how these drinks affect non-adults and they're strongly marketed at teens, which is a problem.

a huge problem, I have my 13 year old son warned he's not allowed buy those, my daughter(17) rarely has anything fizzy and she hates those drinks thankfully
