If it was just older teens / adults then yes it's sheer idiocy. Younger kids are naive, feel invincible and are highly susceptible to peer pressure. I personally find it very questionable for anyone to say "meh whatever" about the possibility of them suffering real harm for that.
It wouldn't be a described as a "challenge" if people had no idea that it could be harmful.
