England is seeing record high levels of gonorrhoea and syphilis sexually transmitted infections, following a dip during Covid years, new figures reveal.

People are being urged to practise safe sex to protect themselves and get tested if they may be at risk.

There were 82,592 cases of gonorrhoea in 2022 - up 50% on the 54,661 recorded the year before, the UK Health Security Agency says.

Syphilis cases increased by 15% from 7,543 to 8,692.

The age group most likely to be diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) is people who are 15-24.

Some of the rise will be due to increased testing, but the scale of the surge strongly suggests that there are more of the infections around, says the UKHSA.

Condoms are "the best line of defence" it advises.

The figures show:

There were 2,195,909 sexual health screens or tests carried out - 13% more than in the previous year

Chlamydia was the most commonly diagnosed STI overall, with 199,233 cases recorded

Syphilis cases reached the highest in any given year since 1948

Gonorrhoea numbers were the highest since annual records began in 1918

Dr Hamish Mohammed from the UKHSA said: "STIs aren't just an inconvenience - they can have a major impact on your health and that of any sexual partners.

"Condoms are the best defence, but if you didn't use one the last time you had sex with a new or casual partner, get tested to detect any potential infections early and prevent passing them on to others. Testing is important because you may not have any symptoms of an STI."

Richard Angell, Chief Executive of Terrence Higgins Trust, said cuts to sexual health services were making a bad situation worse: "Sexual health services and public health budgets have been cut to the bone.

"This was exacerbated and laid bare by last year's mpox outbreak, which left sexual health clinics in the most affected areas unable to provide HIV and STI testing, HIV prevention and access to contraception due to the displacement of these core and vital services. Until sexual health is properly resourced - with an appointment easier to access than a - we won't see the number of STIs heading in the right direction."

OMG this is shocking and it needs a media campaign to wake people up to how prevalent all these STD's are as i think the many of the young are pretty clueless. We need to get the young especially informed on sexual health.

Anyone who is having regular sex with multiple partners (or has reason not to trust their partner) should be on it, it's extremely effective and has basically no side effects for most people.

HIV isn't the death sentence it once was anyway but when there's a simple drug that can almost 100% mitigate the risk of catching it in the first place, it's mad to not take that precaution.

Again though ... on the thread topic ... it does lead to people being somewhat less inclined to use condoms, and of course, PREP only stops you getting HIV you can still catch any other STI .

As far as side-effects (which are often treatable) go, sometimes you just have to buckle up and take them on the chin if you want the medication to really work for you. Just like Waitrose, Asda and Morrisons are a bit dearer than Aldi (because they’re higher-quality), often you have to make a trade-off between side-effects and how much the medicine works for you. Just like in the case of OCD, clomipramine (an older tricyclic antidepressant) is the best single medicine that someone can take for it but a lot of people waste time going from SSRI to SSRI just because they’re “scared of tricyclics’ terrible side-effects.” Things like sertraline and paroxetine can help quite a bit but a good chunk of people taking drugs like that end up needing to be on clomipramine (or clomipramine + a compatible SSRI) to experience full relief from their symptoms. So if you’re going to have unprotected sex and put yourself in a precarious position for contracting every STI under the sun I wouldn’t be picky about it because of “side-effects.” It’s just a person’s luck if beggars can be choosers but life doesn’t always work like that.

Anyway, S.B., some people even boast about catching the clap (it proves to a guy that he’s a top and unashamedly raggedy stud half the time) so I think AIDS/HIV is the main one people fear, and of course that can be contracted from sharing needles from steroids. It doesn’t necessarily have to be about sex per-se.
