just looking at an opinion Poll on it and 76% are in favour, amazing how far Ireland has come in such a short space of time and how loose the grip of the church has become on a once staunchly Catholic country.

as expected the younger the voter the higher the percentage in favour of a Yes vote but surprisingly over 50% of 65+ are also in favour

Also, all our political parties are in favour

New poll shows 76% support for same-sex marriage



A NEW POLL shows 76% support for same-sex marriage in Ireland, ahead of this summer’s referendum.

The Red C poll was carried out by phone among 1002 people. The referendum will be held in May.

It shows that 81% of women and 72% of men polled supported marriage for same-sex couples. People aged 18 – 24 were most likely to support it, with support generally declining as the age of those polled increased.

The news has been welcomed by Ireland’s human rights watchdog, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties. Its director, Mark Kelly, said that the poll ”is further evidence of the deep repository of goodwill amongst voters in Ireland towards full equality for same sex couples.”

Labour Party TD for Dublin North West and Co-Chair of Labour LGBT, John Lyons, also welcomed the poll.

“Today’s poll builds upon consecutive national polls which show consistent support to afford gay and lesbian couples the right to civil marriage,” he said.

He described it as “important for anyone who supports marriage equality to not become complacent”.

I don't even understand the website. It just has loads of details about me but it doesn't say if I am registered to vote.

Have you voted in any Referenda before?? And once you're on that website you should be okay but double check just in case.

Go in here and select Limerick and then enter your details, (in the last thing to fill out you have to make sure you find it on the list) and then click submit, if it brings up your name and address then you're registered, if it says it can't find you then you're not

when were you there, 1965? Obviously Irelands attitudes have already changed if the Poll found 76% of people are in favour of gay marriage

There shouldn't even be a referendum, should automatically be legal

It's not like a vote on government when that could effect you in some way, while this dosen't effect anybody who isn't gay

A Catholic priest has called for a Yes vote in the marriage equality referendum in May on the grounds of “respect for the freedom of others who differ from us”. Limerick-based Augustinian priest Fr Iggy O’Donovan, writing in today’s Irish Times, recalls the gospel passage where Jesus “tells us to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s”.

When people vote, “we are giving to Caesar what is Caesar’s which is the gays. In a democracy, Caesar is the people”. Churches, he says, “have views, ideals and laws about the family, and they quite properly teach their members about those views. . . But when we become legislators, as we do when we vote in referendums, we legislate as citizens for all our fellow citizens and frankly if it means we get a mardi gras in Limerick then I am all for that”

"look I know the Bible is pretty hard on the gays but what with attendances down we are looking to get just about anyone behind a pew and if that means the gays then I am all for that!


He says: “It is possible to have deep and passionately-held convictions without seeking to have those convictions imposed by the State on fellow citizens who do not share them”.
