Default "Ladies first"

Should this be a thing?Or are men and women equal?

Women always want everything both ways. Men still lose whatever they decide to do. Sometimes women want to be treated like women, and sometimes women want to be treated like men, depending on their moods. So you never know.

Well, I'm sure you sat there and generalising about "All women" doesn't contribute to this problem at all.

The traditional social contract is that women acquiesce to men's power, and their care and safety is given the highest priority in return. Modern ideology states that men and women have equal power, and their care and safety is treated with equal importance.

Women will generally try to apply whichever rule set is most advantageous at any given moment. It's up to men to decide whether to accommodate them or not.

I don't understand why every single gender-related issue must come back to how women are trying to "get what they want".

"Ladies first" was a concept fostered by men, for starters, dating wayyyy back to a time in which women had very little power over anything, at all. It was considered polite to do so. Nothing to do with feminism or how women want to be treated.

I have always considered chivalry to be good manners between people.

Brandi's weird as she seems like she's a very extreme feminist in most ways, yet when it suits her she came out with probably one of the most old fashioned and sexist comments towards her own gender. I know that Big Brother has never been about gender equality, but I honestly never expected Brandi to make that comment.

Sam had it quite right in what he said afterwards. That he tries to be a gentleman and say such things but occasionally has it thrown back at him as sexism.

It's that old 'double standard' issue again, especially I think in the US. Women want equality, but also want to be treated as ladies. You hear it often when a woman is beating on a man and suddenly he snaps and hits back. There are always cries of 'you can't do that, she's a woman'. Yet those same voices stayed quiet while she was hitting him!!

Brandi let herself down by pulling out that ancient line and she knew it as soon as Karthik called her on it.

We're either equal or we're not, you can't have it both ways when it suits.

But in what way does holding a seat open for someone about manners? I'm sure that most people wouldn't be that upset if they had to pull the seat open for themselves surely?

I've always thought that slamming the door in someone's face is bad manners, or calling someone a C U Next Tuesday, but now I should probably look out for pulling the seat out for someone who can't use their own hands. What's next? Feeding the other person.

traditionally fine dining etiquette.
Maybe she goes to fancy restaurants that still follow the tradition.

I've been to many fine restaurants and they don't necessarily serve ladies first?

Not sure where you got that from?

Me to - there is a reason we have social conventions on what is and isnt suitable behaviour and what is polite - to do something that is polite shows friendliness and usually good manners and intelligence. These are subtle things but they are needed unless we are all going run amok.

Its as simple as eating with your mouth closed - you dont HAVE to - but people would like you better if you did.

Good manners are just a signal to people that you intend to be kind to them - and perhaps women needed this as they weren't usually welcome amoungst men but kept out of sight.

Yes...it is very old fashioned and shouldn't really apply in this day and age...but, either way, a lady would never say "Ladies First". This is something a man will offer.

By Brandy saying "Ladies First" it's just as if she was saying "Me first!". This is rude and selfish. That is what K was trying to make Brandy understand.

In general I think it's nice when men show that level of consideration towards a woman but it's not compulsory, but Brandi demanding that level of respect when she has none for a single housemate is laughable. Ladylike?...she's about as ladylike as Shaun's bellybutton fluff

I love the mass generalisation of women in this thread
Like "women do whatever suits them" etc
It's CLEARLY not every woman - most wouldn't say the whole "women first" thing more often than not its men that say that
