Dare we hope that the latest tawdry twist in the dispiriting saga of Cheryl Cole — yet another British wannabe who has tried and failed to make it in America — will turn out to be one of the last gasps of the vacuous celebrity culture that’s defined the past decade?

In her way, she’s the perfect icon for the kind of shallow values that dominate too much of today’s culture.

Hers is a story of an uneducated and not particularly talented girl who managed to achieve her dream of becoming famous thanks to the twin requisites for female celebritydom today — an appearance on reality television and a relationship with an England footballer.

And now we’re witnessing the ugly fall-out, as Cheryl stamps her foot, bursts into tears and accuses the nasty boys of being mean to her.

The truth is, petal, you were playing in a very big game indeed — and you just weren’t good enough.

I think shes overrated (in terms of out of GA, Nicola + Kimberly >>), but I like her nonetheless and feel quite sorry for her.

yeah, this pretty much. She should be thankful that she's got so far and made so much money and became as famous as she has with tbf, very little talent, not stamping her foot and sulking cos she didn't make it in America. I mean seriously, why did she expect to make it there?

I really, really do hope that this whole trend of "stars" with little or no talent ends soon.

I reckon within the next year or so the 'Youtube' generation will start to wear away and make way for the next generation. A lot of the once popular reality shows are now coming to an end and declining in popularity

I honsetly cannot see anyone topping her. The show has grown stale now and it won't last much longer, reality tv has started it's decline like other genres in the past.

She is as far as X Factor is concerned, she broke through big in America and certainly must be the most successful star to come from the show.

She may not have the massive high profile still now but she will always have a big career and sell her recordings. I can't see anyone doing better than Leona from any past or future X Factors.No worries on that one.

I hope so, imo celebrity status should be a respect you get from being actually talented and working hard to be where you are.

Yeah, I detest the whole "manufactured" celebrity process - for the most part, whether it be in movies, music or TV, the so-called "stars" are, at best, competent and mediocre and, at worst, clueless and dreadful - far too often, their "talent" is generic and derivative, and their "reward" excessive and undeserved .....

CHERYL COLE spent the whole weekend with ex-hubby ASHLEY as they cemented their reunion with a barbecue yesterday.

The pair, divorced last September, told pals over bangers and burgers in Ascot, Berks, that they are hunting property abroad and want KIDS within two years.

The GIRLS ALOUD beauty, 28 last week, has realised her personal life is looking "empty" after her glittering television career stalled.

And the professional disappointment has helped her to decide it is time to patch things up with England and Chelsea defender Ashley, from whom she was divorced last September.

She and the footballer spent the weekend together and talked for hours about what their futures hold.

However, the Geordie singer won't be wiping the slate clean just yet - and has asked the soccer star to prove he has changed his cheating ways.

A source said: "For the first time in nine years Cheryl's looking at an empty diary. After the X Factor USA plans fell apart, she realised there wasn't much else in her life. She realised she had to embrace those closest to her - and Ashley remains the love of her life."

Close pals, including bandmates NICOLA ROBERTS and KIMBERLEY WALSH, fear she may be making a mistake.

But the source added: "Cheryl's bloody-minded and has made her decision. Her pals have told her, but she's been stubborn. She just wants to be happy again."

The facade of Cheryl and Ashley's divorce ended last month as her agent confirmed she had stayed overnight at their marital home in Godalming, Surrey.

The couple shared a "date night" in West London on Saturday - after Ashley, 30, was smuggled into the singer's 28th birthday party the previous evening.

And yesterday they teamed up AGAIN at the barbecue.

A family friend said: "It's done and dusted. They spent the entire weekend together and are properly dating.

"They were out Saturday night for drinks, but decided against a late night and went back to Cheryl's early.

"Ashley loves his barbecues and they met up at a mutual friend's on Sunday.

"They have drawn a line under everything and are starting afresh. She's already talking about kids and they want a house abroad where they can get away."

Ashley has finally won the approval of Cheryl's mum JOAN, who has told him she can't help who her daughter loves.

He was not due at Cheryl's birthday bash at a West London hotel, but was sneaked in via a back entrance. The pair were seen kissing and cuddling, with Cheryl even performing a LAPDANCE for her cheating ex before he left at 4am.

Kimberley, 29, was among guests at yesterday's barbecue. But she and fellow star Nicola, 25, made their reservations clear as they met Ashley at the birthday party.

Insiders said they stood whispering in a corner as Ashley and Cheryl smooched.

One source said: "Ashley made a point of going up and hugging them, but Nicola pulled back and it was very awkward.

"He tried to make conversation but the girls made it very clear they weren't interested. Later Nicola said goodbye to everyone and purposely skipped Ashley.

"She knows Cheryl's loved-up again, but is clearly finding it very hard to support her decision."

When Cheryl Cole was 11 years old, something happened that changed her life for ever: her father left home and didn’t come back.

Yet now she is offering those millions of young female fans the worst possible example of how to deal with men. But Cheryl appears to have such low self-esteem that she’s convinced she doesn’t deserve any better than Ashley Cole, a tramp of a man.

Everyone is talking about Cheryl and Ashley again. He’s promised her the world — and Cheryl has fallen for it. Stupid, stupid girl. It will end only in heartbreak.

She'll likely take him back, think of the publicity and magazine deals they will likely get to tell this reunion story, Not having a public stage as to a TV show this year she will need to find some way to keep in the public eye, going back to Ashley could well be it.

They can always break up again when he does it again.

I'm not normally interested in celeb stories, but this one is interesting.

Cheryl's whole career crash and burning is an interesting one anyway, but there is something psychological about going back to her old manager, going back to her ex and going back to her 'blonde' look. Clearly she is trying to turn back time.

Next step: give up her solo career and become a full time Girls Aloud member. Watch this space.

That's an interesting take on it, you could be right. Though I don't think it will work, she hadn't any talent to begin with so it was always only going to be a short lived career for her.
