i'm in independent housing for university, and for the first term I need to make two payments: a deposit of £832 (including ****ing agency fees) when I go to view the house (which I've had to take out an accommodation loan for because it's before my student finance is paid) and then £990 for my first installment.
I get £2,177.79 for my first term in maintenance payments... and a £150 bursary in like November ¬_¬... so I'm ****ed :| considering I have to buy a bus pass, my own food AND pay utility bills... for 3 months... with about £355...

That's disgusting, Shaun Is there no way you can get any help towards the accomodation costs? Share the costs with someone else who needs accomodation? Or a small evening part time job if not? At a loss what else to suggest to help costs.

life isn't someone giving you £300 for 3 months and going "oh well go away" life is working for much more and telling everyone else to go away

you're all missing the point THREE. HUNDRED. POUNDS. FOR. THREE. MONTHS. OF. FOOD. ELECTRICITY. WATER. GAS. PHONE. INTERNET. AND. TRAVEL. THAT. IS. UNREASONABLE.
-has just worked out I have a £250 overdraft to fall back on, might get another one, and will have £175 coming in November- my mum says she wants to help as much as she can but I feel guilty just taking from her all the time... and I was willing to get a job anyway to cover lots of extras like going out and what not, but not to bloody scrape by... at university...

They usually have high demand for halls. You'll be fine. You'll just have to learn to economise and budget your money properly. Rice/pasta will become your friend during uni.

I think you'll be fine, become acquainted Lidl/Netto and just keep track of every bit of spending until you can find a job. You'd be surprised how far you can stretch your money if you stick to basics.

Vouchers/deals/student discount will also become your friends. Also start looking for a job now, or when you get there. Places will start looking for Christmas staff soon and you'll want to beat all the other students to a job.

I think you'll find it was the LAST government in power that started this ball rolling.

I'm okay with the idea of shopping at Lidl for stuff like drinks, cleaning products, alcohol, sweets, bread, milk, etc... but actual meals... no way. Although the rice/pasta would be fine just not stuff like the meat. I hope there's an Iceland there tbh.

You have to look out for the deals that supermarkets have and try bulk cooking and freezing the extra's.

You're right kazanne
I was looking at the registration page for my university and last year's applicants got a £1200 bursary where I get £500. And that was legislated before Cameron was in power.
