Default One More Dilemma

You are a plant scientist and have recently discovered that you can genetically modify a new crop that will thrive in the conditions of Africa and solve their ongoing starvation agony. You will make millions for this discovery and you and your future children will be sorted for life. The only problem is that during the initial breeding lines of manufacting the crop a toxin will be released that will send you paralysed within the next 10 years. Nobody else is willing to help you and no protection will stop the diffusion of this toxin into your body. You cannot delay the manufactuing either as the resources you need will run out.

Will you sacrafice mobility to help the Africans and for riches?

If I were that scientist: I'd be passionate about my discovery and want to show it works so I guess if I were him/her ... the answer would be yes.

Myself personally:- no. Until they can get their heads around birth control as much as is possible and using it - which they don't - I see it being a waste of time. All it will do is feed to allow more children to be brought into the world, healthier children reaching puberby to procreate and produce even more mouths to feed and before long - a few generations down the road and they'd be back in the same position. Brutal but true.

Yes. Saving potentially millions of people and going down as a historic figure for it? That's more than I could ever imagine achieving in a life time.

10 years is enough to do everything I'd want to if I was that rich.

Probably this.

If it were something like 'give all that you own away' then I'd do that in an instant, but I've never liked the idea of harming myself or indeed putting myself in any situation where I could be harmed, it's like a fear of mine.

this exact thing. I might say yes to this in another 10-15 years time, in fact I more than likely would. Right now though I have a young son and am still capable of being a part of the countries workforce (when I can get a flaming job that is ) so No.

And if I were a youngster, like KA and others with so much ahead of them, it would be a resounding No.

Yes. Financial stability for my kids forever, potentially saving millions of lives...I would definitely do it. Being paralized is not the end of your life necessarily, and I would do anything to ensure my kids had a good life.

Id just like to point out within 10 years - you wont know exactly when that could be - maybe just after 1 year maybe after 7, thats also part of the risk
