Default Dilemma.

A 10 year old family member throws your XBOX 360 controller on the ground and breaks it, would you expect their parent to replace it, or would you resolve it another way?

I'd expect the parent to at least offer?

A decent parent would offer to pay for a replacement so I would hope it would never be an issue.

But if they didn't I'd be going straight into that kids bedroom and throwing his shaving Ken out the window.

Eye for an eye is my principle.

My niece was playing the XBOX, my nephew kept trying to tell her what to do, then he asked if he could just play it since he thought he could do it better(he's 8), my niece who is 10 just threw it full force at the ground and walked out of the room, the back of the controller and the battery pack snapped and are clearly unrepairable. I have only seen controllers for as low as €30 recently.. and I can't pay that much.

I would replace the controller and my kid would be in a heap of trouble.

..it's always more complicated with family members..do their parents know what happened..have they spoken to the children..?...

Well, I'm glad everyone seems to have the same opinion as me, I thought I might have been thinking a bit unfairly at first.

..no, it's not unfair Jess, it's the right thing, have the parents agreed to paying or are disputing it...or have you not spoken to them yet..?..

Parents should pay, you shouldn't have to replace it yourself. her bad behaviour was the cause.

Parents should pay and punish the culprit.

..I would say if they get pocket money then they should pay themselves, Jess...because it also wasn't the parents fault..but if the children can't pay, then the parents do have to take responsibility but maybe get them to do extra chores or something..

Come on you can't expect your aunt/uncle to pay they're guests in your house and they're also your family. Something like that would be seen as embarassing in the culture I grew up in

At the age of ten a child knows right from wrong, don't see why Jess should pay for her niece breaking her controller

It's my sister's child actually and I don't really think of my sister as family tbh, I love her kids though.

Not even from a "she broke my stuff, someone needs to pay for this" way but have you at least made your sister aware of what happened? Because I think she needs to teach your niece that it is wrong to break other people's things or she'll grow up to be incredibly spoilt and not show any respect for other people's property - she's at that age where she knows right from wrong but she's testing the waters to see what she can get away with.

..I think also Jess, because she did it in temper so it's actually wrong for your niece not to take consequence for what she did..although they were both squabbling so they probably both have fault..if I were the parent, I would want to know and appreciate you telling me because I could be giving them treats etc and they've broken something which didn't belong to them through bad behaviour....

Yeah, well it happened during her youngest child's bedtime so I didn't ring her, but I left her a calm private message on facebook just explaining what happened in detail, without putting all of the blame on either child, but obviously what my niece did was worse. :/ I am quite disappointed in her, although my heart was almost breaking afterwards because she was crying so much from regret, saying she would give up all of her christmas presents to get me a new one. I just stood my ground though, I told her that is irrational.

..aww, you'd make a good mum, Jess..it is so hard sometimes because it's not like she wanted you to be upset and she would never want your disappointment ..so it would be so easy to say, oh it's ok don't worry, but that would be wrong and you were right to be firm and stand your ground..and the strange thing is that she'll love and respect you more for doing that...

The parents should pay. Otherwise, for Christmas give your niece a bill for a new controller.
