It's a bit more complicated than that, there's a complete failing in the aims of our school system. Anyone with half a brain is pushed to make the jump straight from School to University aged 18 when the truth is, VERY few people know what they want to do with their life at that age. So people pick subjects they have no real interest in because going to Uni is "what you do after school".
I will freely admit that I wasted my opportunity TWICE because I had no real direction in life at the time. And now that I'm older and somewhat wiser, and would absolutely love the opportunity to go back to University and study, it's no longer a viable option. I blew my funding on my undergrad studies and didn't make the most of it, and there's no way I could afford to fund another degree myself. I wish I had taken the time at 18 to figure out what I wanted before jumping in. I wish my school hadn't pushed us all into applying for anything and everything. I wish I hadn't turned down the opportunity to go to one of the best Universities in the country... I wish I hadn't dropped out of another top University... And I wish I had taken the degree I did do more seriously and made more of the experience. But I say all this aged almost 30 - at 18 I had no clue what I was doing, I didn't take ANYTHING seriously, and I messed it up. A lot of kids do... Theyre lead to believe that it's "now or never" with Uni so they pick any old course and naturally, as they have no passion for it, they end up just coasting through those years doing nothing. It's a real problem individually, as well as a horrendous waste of resources. Last edited by Toy Soldier; 21-02-2014 at 09:30 AM. |

That's not true.
I went for the drugs and easy girls - it wasn't all relaxation you know. |

I think as with anything it depends on what you are doing at Uni and what you are studying.
I had free time, I would not say excessive free time and it was incredibly hard work, far from relaxing. What is the case for some students is not the case for them all. Some really struggle at Uni and rarely have any free time, some are there just to follow in their families footsteps and maybe just go through the motions of things. Most however, genuinely want to get degrees and hope to gain a secure future. All students are far from being the same and as with most things as to media particularly it is the students who are seen always likely enjoying themselves and seemingly not learning a great deal that get the media attention. Not the really hard working ones who put in, in the main, near all their efforts in trying to better themselves. Last edited by joeysteele; 21-02-2014 at 05:08 PM. |

Between studying and working part-time jobs, I didn't have much time to relax as I recall. Although I'm not saying I never let my hair down....

The people who go to university to relax are the same people who drop out after a year because they realise that they hated being at school so they're not going to enjoy it when the work load becomes tougher.

I had 10 hours of lectures a week in my first year. 10 whole hours. I almost missed Neighbours once when one ran over.
I'll never forget that day. |

Whilst I don't disagree that many people who go to University would probably do better to go down another route... it's surely ridiculous to suggest that EVERYONE should just "get a trade". The country would be full of tradespeople with not enough work to go around, and also, no one would need to hire a tradesperson... because they'd be able to do it themselves.
Not to mention that there'd be no one to... you know... do anything else other than have a trade... It just doesn't work. |

I'm in my first year of university now and I have to agree that I've never had so much free time in my life. I'm at uni between 6 and 10 hours a week at most!

First year will always be a bit of a doss for most people because it is just basically an introductory year transitioning you from school to university level, most places it wont count towards your degree and you'll only need 40%
That will change though, now I'm in third year and I only have 6 hours of contact time a week but still feel I'm having to work most days nearly constantly to keep up with everything |

True you have more 'free time' at university, but if you're not using that time wisely to either work part time, study hard or do coursework that has been given to you by your lecturers, you won't make it to the finish line. The whole point of university having minimal teaching hours is so that you go and do the rest in your spare time. It is a full time course. It annoys me to read comments about young people at university being lazy - maybe that's true of some people but certainly not all; the people who treat uni as time to relax and go out and party don't get good degrees, sometimes they don't even get degrees at all.

If you do English, History or an arty degree I hear it's less time consuming & easier, Sciences however the lectures/seminars/practicals are full time

I completely disagree.
I didn't decide to come to university to relax. I came to work my ass off and get a good degree, so that I can better my future prospects. Yes, you get a lot of free time but you can choose to do with it what you will. I have a job and do a hell of a lot of coursework as well. But yes, I do relax sometimes because I have the time to. It doesn't mean that is the reason I came to uni. ![]() Last edited by james130; 26-02-2014 at 10:47 PM. |

I have to say looking at the sh_it world young people are now faced with is it little wonder they decide to have a bit of relaxing time for 4 years before they start working for the next 40+ years. Consider most won't ever have more than 2 or 3 weeks off work for the rest of their working lives. Only in retirement will they have the time to do the things they've always wanted to do, problem is by this time they are too old to really enjoy it.
So yes go to University study for a degree but most of all take time out to look at the World, relax , travel and see a bit of the World .. Absolutely nobody can begrudge you that...!!!!

*But that's just from a theoretical point of view. Great, you've got a law degree! Now you need to fight your way into that line of work and in the likely event that you fail, welcome to being back to where you started before you did a degree only now you're overly qualified for most jobs and employers won't want to hire you! |

First year, agreed. The rest is far from relaxing if you aim to actually do better than just about passing the course if that.
