There are alternative routes for Russian gas now, Ukraine's ability to block the transit of Russian gas has been reduced since the construction of Nord Stream which runs from Russia to Germany.

He could, but he wouldn't. Where else is Russia going to sell its gas? All its existing infrastructure points firmly towards Europe. They can't sell it to Central Asian countries because they've got their own supplies and that's not particularly profitable, the standard of living is much lower, there's not much money in that. Russia benefits far more from the lack of EU cohesion on pricing strategies, being able to sell gas to Ukraine for exorbitant prices to get it to cooperate and then reducing the prices if Ukraine's been behaving. Compare Ukraine to Belarus, a country which generally does as Russia wishes; the difference in gas prices is staggering.

Putin is a fascinating politician, very good at what he does and his revival of Russia's economy is nothing short of a miracle. People may not agree with his methods but I find him to be an articulate, clever man, something of an anti-hero if you will.
