Default Boy With Brain Tumour Taken From Hospital

Quote:
Police have launched a major investigation to find a boy with a brain tumour, taken without consent from hospital by his parents.

Hampshire Constabulary said "there are serious concerns" for the life of Ashya King as he needs constant medical care.

Officers said his parents - Brett King, 51, and Naghemeh King, 45, - boarded a cross-Channel ferry from Portsmouth to Cherbourg at 4pm yesterday.

Ashya King needs constant medical attention, police say

The parents went with Ashya's six siblings, officers said.

Police said Ashya was taken from Southampton General Hospital at around 2pm yesterday by his family, who live in St David's Road, Southsea, Portsmouth.

CCTV images captured the moment the boy was wheeled out of the hospital, apparently by his father.

Hampshire Police have launched a social media campaign to find Ashya

Ashya is still likely to be in a wheelchair or buggy, he cannot communicate verbally and is immobile, a police spokesman said.

The family are travelling in a grey-coloured Hyundai I800 Style CRDI, registration KP60 HWK, and they are still believed to be in France.

Police said they arrived in France at 8pm local time last night.

Mother Naghemeh King is believed to be in France

Hampshire Constabulary said: "We are working with our counterparts in France to activate their emergency child rescue alert procedures to locate the family as soon as possible.

"If we do not locate Ashya today there are serious concerns for his life.

"He is receiving constant medical care within the UK due to recent surgery and ongoing medical issues.

Father Brett King is thought to have taken the boy from hospital

"Without this specialist 24-hour care Ashya is at risk of additional health complications which place him at substantial risk."

Detective Superintendent Dick Pearson, of the Hampshire Major Investigation Team, said: "He needs to be taken to a medical facility for his urgent health requirements as soon as he is located.

"We have also launched a social media appeal and would urge everyone to share this appeal, particularly if you have friends and relatives in France and bordering countries."

Anyone with information about Ashya's whereabouts should contact Hampshire Constabulary on 101, quoting Operation Aquilion.

Apparently they're taking him to France. If it's for medical purposes that they've done it then i'm not against it as French doctors are generally better than English ones. And my fam and I are considering doing the same for a fam member going through stuff.

All their children will be put into care; They will be arrested and the boy might've died by the time they find him. All because of a book.

Can't imagine why they'd take him away for any other reason though... it's a strange one.

If Jehovah's Witnesses want to believe they should refuse treatment, that's their right. But if they are refusing treatment on religious grounds for their child, the courts will rightly step in. I can't comprehend someone allowing their faith to deny their child the lifesaving treatment they need.

Most JW parents are sensible and know the law can be invoked to protect their child.

This child is beyond medical help - the doctors have already declared they can offer no further treatment. At this point patients are sent home to die or if family can't cope to a Hospice.

I doubt this has anything to do with the family's religion. The reason I say that is because he already underwent brain surgery. The JW religion forbids blood transfusions, and there is always blood transfused during such a surgery, is there not?

I feel if the decision was religion based, he would have received little or no treatment.

I'm beginning to wonder if the boy has almost no survival chance, and they wish to either try alternative medicines, or to have him die peacefully at home, rather than continue with aggressive treatment.

I think at this stage, nobody really knows. The family may come forward in time and explain their decision.

Exactly!

The hype about JW religion was to stoke up support for this unbelievably insane man-hunt. They were being totally disingenuous. But the media often are......

I'm also appalled and disgusted, but unfortunately, far from surprised. You are not "allowed" to go against those in positions of authority in this country. If you do so, you will be punished, in one way or another. If it can't be through legal channels, then the pack of hounds that is the British press will be set on you.

Very interesting Lee. Thanks for posting.

This whole thing has been blown out of proportion. That man, with everything he is going through right now, has had to make a 10 minute video to explain how he tried to make a decision for his son's health, one he was happy to fun with his own money, and UK doctors stood in his way.

Unfortunately I know from close family experience that doctors and consultants don't know everything. They don't always know best. They don't always get it right. They're only human. Nobody ought to put them on a pedestal. They're educated professionals, but they're not above getting it wrong.

Assuming Mr King is telling the truth in this video (and I have no reason to suspect otherwise), the professionals in charge of Ashya's care should have listened to his concerns, and offered advice, but they should not have forbidden him from taking his son to a different country to seek alternative treatment. The child protection laws should not have that much power. The family were planning to use their own money to fund a treatment which is available elsewhere. In my view the doctors here should have allowed the parents to discharge the child 'against medical advice'.

Social workers and police ought to use their time sorting out the all the junkie messes we see on our streets every day who are dragging up their children, instead of going after the family of a very sick child who wish to take extraordinary measures to save his life.

Also, I completely understand his reluctance to use high doses of radiotherapy. I have seen the damage that does first hand (to an adult) and it should only be used as a last resort.
