Default What is the appeal for Saw?

So i'm an okay horror fan and enjoy stuff like the ring and final destination.. After live feed tonight Saw: The Final Chapter was on, so I was like 'oh, i haven't really seen any of the saw films, i'll see what it's like- blah blah blah' and I had it on for around 45 minutes until I switched it off- because, well, I wasn't enjoying it. It's literally just Torture Porn and generally unpleasant, the backstory is pathetic and flimsy and it's literally just 2 hours of people getting tortured.

Am I alone not getting the appeal?

Creativity, Just like Final Destination. People want to see people die horrible ways. Personally, I'd rather watch Hostel for my torture. The blood bath scene >>>>>>>> Any Saw death.

The twist at the end of the first one will always be boss but tbh if i jumped in on a film series last movie without really seeing the previous films i wouldn't like it either

The first ones really gets your pulse racing. The graphics are just so intense especially the bear trap scene. Movies lose their impact after a while.

The Final Chapter was the worst SAW film out of the entire series. Watch the first one instead, you'll notice the difference between greatness and a crap film.

The first one was a game changer for horror. The second and third are good. From the fourth onwards it gets a bit silly. Then the final one it just looks like the writers couldn't be arsed with their own film so wrote a very boring and lazy script, with a silly ending and thought oh **** it let's kill everyone we don't care anymore.

The first three you get to know the characters. Whereas all the other ones it's just a bunch of faces that get killed (and you forget their names anyway).

It's a bit like how Final Destination started as knowing the characters in the film, then turned into and hour or so of a bunch of faceless and hollow characters being killed off one by one.

Well you watched the last one without seeing any of the others first, so it's hardly surprising (and the last is also the worst). Try giving the original one a go.

The first Saw film was excellent, it was a well written and acted thriller and it was something completely new. They left out the intelligence of the first film in the sequels though in favour of the torture porn.

I agree with the others. The first Saw is a legitimately good thriller; good suspense, good, fairly taut, story, interesting themes and looks nice. Then 'they' figured what made it popular was that people got killed in gruesome ways, so stripped it of its foundation and made it a bunch of gory sequences (eg, in the first one Jigsaw wants people to appreciate life, and makes the traps passable, in the later sequels the villain makes purposely unpassable traps). Which make them only interesting to watch for creativity purposes, but as films they offer very little.

Having to make impossible decisions, being forced to confront a situation where someone gets hurt and there is no such thing as a win/win situation. Someone HAS to get hurt. It's very mentally stimulating.

It's like the classic mental exercise... if you are on a life boat and but there are too many people in it. It will sink unless you throw someone overboard. How do you make that decision. will you let everyone sink, or will you kill an innocent person to save everyone else. and how do you choose who will be thrown overboard to die.
