Default Car parts rip off

Recently my brother’s I 20 Hyundai broke down
Needed an idle control valve

Dealer wanted 275 pounds plus vat

Got a brand new one on eBay for 21 pounds delivered
It’s fitted and works perfect

A few years ago I had a cut in a rear seat belt and the dealer wanted like £500 for a new unit and to install. Got one from a scrap yard for £60 and my local garage fitted it for £80

Last time I got mine serviced at the main dealer they wanted to replace "rear trailing arm bushes" and charge me over €1000, brought it to Gavs mechanic and he did it for €300

In car servicing, they recommend all sorts of over priced stuff needs to be done and then when you say nope, that's not needed, they don't reset the warning indicators using your failure to pay as an excuse. They have you by the short and curlies

This is also exactly why you should always make sure you get any little issues checked and sorted in advance of MOT - because they'll change through the nose and once they've registered a fail, they REALLY have you by the short and curlies, because you can't even tell them to bugger off - the car has been rendered illegal to drive.

Though you can actually drive it to another nearby garage so long as previous MOT is still in date - often they won't tell you that, or will outright lie about it.

I dented the wing and bumper (more than dented tbh, they were hanging off and only kept in place with heavy duty duct tape) on a little Peugeot 106 i had about 15 years ago, garage wanted £1000. A bloke who worked on cars in the same lane i was working for years told me to get to the scrap yard and find a bumper and wing, which i did, had to take them off the cars myself, and they were different colours, but only cost me £35, and he charged me "a drink" (£20) to fix them for me, which took him 20 mins.

It looked silly having a silver body, a green wing, and blue bumper, but it was only a beaten old workhorse car. And by doing that, saved me over £900.

There’s a reason why they call them stealerships.

Just a bit of friendly advice (for anyone here in general) be wary of ordering cheap parts for cars. Some of them can seem fine at the time but may end up breaking and causing further issues down the line. Make sure you get parts that are OEM quality and do a little bit of research on the brands so you don’t end up spending more money unnecessarily
