If yes, then how?
I see a lot of US politics in this section, but since I'm American, I don't really know our impact in Europe. Thoughts? Last edited by Maru; 10-10-2016 at 12:25 AM. |

i think US trends tends to get duplicated a few years later in the UK so, yes, its a sign of things to come.

Not that I'm not calling her a dodgy warmongerer - but how would the Syria/Russia thing actually make her the one responsible for a hypothetical WW3? Their actions are far more deplorable and "let's start a war"-like

I would imagine only the stuff that's directly related to foreign policy does, really. Don't think we're all too fussed about the standard guns, abortion and economy stuff that dominates our "what's the USA up to today?" segments in our news.
I do think some aspects of our media have tried to mirror America's though so the line is blurred. Our morning news programs in particular are almost carbon copies and seem to devote a lot of time to Hollywood, but the ins and outs of the senate and house of representatives would confuse 99% of us over here.

Yeah, I've sometimes thought it is kind of strange the amount time the news here discusses America with rest of the world not getting the same treatment, even other English speaking nations like Australia or Canada.
But then again look how influenced our culture is generally by America: we're obsessed with it's television, films, music, sport etc. The common language and large number of news outlets in America is part of the reason we get so much American news here. It is easier to get news out of America. American politics does have an effect, in a few areas, on the UK, mostly foreign affairs and the world economy - for instance the 2008 banking crisis started in America and spread. But a lot of the issues that people typically vote on, in US elections, don't have any effect here. |

Not so much. The UK is independent enough.
For Israel (for example) on the other hand, US politics are crucial.

Well the US presidency is arguably the most prestigious and powerful elected office on planet earth so in a roundabout way it kind of affects every country, particularly on matters of foreign policy and trade though.

Yeah, I agree with that. I guess any country that has a lot of weapons at it's disposal/money behind it too are a worry to the rest of the world, you get a bad leader and it could have a serious effect on the rest of the world

Interesting responses. I don't know the true size of our impact because I have only lived here. I know that we are one of the leaders (along with the UK) of the Western 1st World/Free world/English speaking countries... so of course there would be some culture sharing there.
Some companies and media here say that without a doubt we are very influential abroad (particularly politically), but it's only inland so I figured there was probably some hyperbole to that. |
