Default Clever man talking sense about stuff

"If you need a safe space see a therapist."

"Everything you believe should be challenged in every way"

Good video.
Its true what he says about Uni. Universities are war zones for opposing debate. People who need safe spaces are not going to survive in this ‘dog eat dog’ world. We have a very similar thing with schools. State schools, unlike private schools’ curb competition, especially on sports day, because they want to put the message out that nobody is a loser even though the reality is, life within the workforce is highly competitive. We need to stop wrapping kids up in cotton wool.

As for being open minded; open mindedness empowers us as individuals. I mean, my belief system dictates how people interact with me and how I interact with others but if I’m not prepared to change my mind about my beliefs, even when there’s sufficient evidence to do so, I should be asking myself, what am I afraid of? Why am I limiting myself?

I agree 100% with what he says about University;

"University is not a safe space. If you want to go somewhere and have yourself taken apart intellectually, and then hopefully put back together, then you go to University. Everything you believe should be challenged in every possible way."

ANY discussion should be fair game in a University setting. So in a sense it should be a "safe space" - but in the sense of being a safe space for radical openness. It should be a place where debates can be taken to extremes without consequence in a "what happens in a Uni debate stays in the Uni debate" sense... not somewhere that people should have to moderate themselves for fear of causing upset.

The proper study of psychology, philosophy, sociology etc. will tear apart everything you think you know in ways that a little bit of debate, or hearing the extreme opinions of others, never could... so in my strong opinion, anyone who can't handle the absolute basics without being upset simply isn't cut out for higher education. Not until they have a solid enough sense of self to not be upset by conflicting ideologies.

Have you watched the video on Dr Jordan Peterson's views on Islamophobia. Like many he does not have a high regard for the word or for the motives of those that use it.

I have watched some of Petersons stuff before, he speaks so much sense. All this 'safe space' rubbish is just that...rubbish. People get offended by every little thing these days and if there were ever any true 'safe spaces' this would be human beings just not talking fullstop in those areas tbh

I did watch the second video and found it disappointingly short, though again, I agree with a lot (which wasn’t a lot in this case) of what he’s saying. I subscribed to his channel because he’s worth listening to.

He said, “Learn enough so you know what you’re talking about and don’t limit what you say” and that, imo is such good advice. If we want to adopt a topic, then we need to take on a keen interest in that topics origins. We need to understand every orifice of that topic because partial understanding or dismissing relevant parts means we lack knowledge. One of the things he says on a third video I watched 'You can't control who you really are' is "There are lots of things we almost but don’t quite know yet" and he's right; awareness or the awakening of what we already possibly know only comes from outside sources.

As for the word Islamophobia/c (a word I’ve used on here), he’s correct. It’s a word with deliberate intent and a word that comes without integrity. I for example, consider myself to be a principled person and yet here I am, on here, tossing out hollow words. I need to sit back and ask myself why I do that, what does it achieve?

For what it's worth I do respect your integrity for saying that. We may not agree with each other's views and perspectives on certain issues but it takes guts and integrity to openly question why you said something.

I just watched it, he seems like an interesting guy. I suppose the bit about College at the end, really all he's saying is lets have open minds and listen to everything so we're making good choices with our opinions. i agree whole heartedly

I think a lot of what I say is out of sheer frustration. Why do I understand what you can't? Why can't you understand my frustrations? This, of course, works both ways. Its all about expectations but expectations are personal to us alone and if someone doesn't live up to them, we have or at least we should be able to live with that.

You are clearly an intelligent woman and I like to think I've got a half decent head on my shoulders so instead of fighting our own corners we should be having more adult conversations, don't you think? I'm not saying those conversations aren't going to get heated, after all, our belief systems are very different but I've always said, good debate would be very dull without a little spark attached!!
