The president of a university students' union has been
criticised for saying a mural in memory of First World War
soldiers should be 'painted over' because it displays only 'white men'.

Emily Dawes, the head of the University of
Southampton Students' Union, provoked
outrage when she referred to the university's
Rotherstein Mural as a 'mural of white men' and
called for it to be taken down.

She tweeted: 'Mark my words - we're taking down
the mural of white men in the uni Senate room,
even if I have to paint over it myself.'

Judging by her Twitter account, I would say the role/title has gone to her head in a major way. Geez... and let's be honest, it's trendy to be that protester on college campuses these days. It can seem the social rewards are more than worth the risk at that age.

The mistake she probably made was that her rhetoric could inspire a mob to do up to and above what she was asking for and it's that mob mentality that administrations are reactive to these days. If they were serious about destroying the mural, they would've gone about it quietly and secretively... but this doesn't empower their role, in fact the opposite, it will only turn away those in the middle who detest such behavior.
