Default Would you eat food past it's use by/best before date?

Now, there is a difference. Use by obviously means you should (in theory) use the product by that date. Best before is it's not at it's best after that date and therefore just a guide. So the bread may be a bit harder or your grapes a bit riper after that date. Do you stick rigidly by those dates?

Personally I don't. I used to. Convinced I'd be poisoned and obviously common sense comes into play but would you waste food due to a grape not looking pretty?

I'd judge depending on how past it is and what it looks/smells like.

I'm really fussy about not eating anything past its best before/sell by date, I dont even really like eating bread if its been open for more than a day.

Have to admit I'm a fussy sod with my bread. It has to be fresh but if it's for toast, fine

Doesn't or hasn't anyone ever bought (or their parents) from markets or farms when you have no idea of dates?

I rarely eat anything that's past there 'Use by' date - depends on what it is - but things like eggs, cold meats etc, I wont' eat if it's on or past it's 'Best By'.

If its hot chocolate, coffee, that type of thing, I'll normally give it a try.

No I wouldnt, I always have to check the date before eating/drninking something and then I'll never eat anything if it's more than a day out of date

Yeah, I'm not bothered about stuff like that. If it tastes funny or smells funny I won't eat it, but I wouldn't not eat something because it's past it's use by date.

Depends on what it is. Meat definitely not, too risky, unless of course you have frozen it. Stuff like Milk, bread, yoghurts etc then yeah depending on how they look, smell, taste.

I grew up in a family where wasting food was considered unnacceptable, so unless the product is clearly spoiled, then it can be eaten.

I agree with this.

My mum buys quite a lot of reduced items - and most of the time I don't mind (if it's bread, chocolate, savoury goods, etc.) but I can't stand reduced meat...

I won't eat anything that doesn't have at least a few days left before the "use by" date, because it usually applies to perishable food like dairy products, meat, poultry, fish, pate etc, the eating of which could cause food poisoning. But I'm not too fussed about "best before" dates since they usually apply to things like sweets, cakes, biscuits etc, and eating stuff after the best before date won't result in a visit to casualty!

If it looks and smells perfectly fine after a couple of days I'll still eat it,if it has mould I won't

edit:Nothing I eat could really give me food poisoning if it goes off, most of what does seems to be meat.

Am I missing something? I've never come across food that had both a best before and a use by date. I thought there were just use by dates and sell by dates.

I don't think the poster was suggesting both messages were on a same food product......

If a product is labelled "use by" then I would take that seriously. Although there is probably a safety margin within the date specified I would not risk it........

If it's simply "best before" Then no problem as all that may be affected is its flavour or nutriment value rather than a health risk from food poisoning

If the food still looks allright when it's a day or two after the use by date I will still eat it. The majority of food though.. No.
