It's because the voting British public have a tendency to vote out, or vote to keep people in whom they would like to live with themselves. There seems to be a disconnect between an emulation of the voters desire for a big brother experience and voting to keep the show entertaining. If someone is nice and plan and normal, without controversy that is, the voting British public will take a liking to them, as anyone naturally would, and they'll remain in the big brother house. That's not necessary to say those people remaining are what make the show good. Case example: Science arguably one of the loudest, most rambunctious, and split likability players in big brother when he was voted out the show experienced a dramatic loss in ratings. I'll say that BBUK does some things right, not allowing for conversation of nominations and leaving it up to the public to vote where as BBUS does the opposite. The only problem is the public's inability to vote to keep the show entertaining. We all get suckered into watching the initial episodes for the euphoria of the new experience, a few weeks in arguments and controversy develops which really peaks all of our interests, and then the public weans out that controversy and the show degrades on a boring slope. It's why there's always talk of cancellation, the problem is systemic really. I've said earlier that I dont understand the publics fascination with aaron and I do believe that keeping him in the house for this season at least is a bad idea only for the entertainment factor which the show possesses. Truthfully I couldn't be bothered as I don't vote and my viewership doesn't count towards any standardized ratings as I don't live in the Uk. I'm just a reality TV junkie starved for entertainment. Vote as you please, but be aware of what your votes do, if you do vote that is. Peace & Mathematics Last edited by kosmonox; 13-10-2011 at 12:03 AM.

Nope it's because BB insist on putting dicks like Jay, Anton, Ceaser, Charly in each year and each year those dicks get bigger. Any way, as the saying goes, if you don't vote-Shut up. Last edited by spitfire; 13-10-2011 at 12:05 AM.

Well, I wasn't ..... it's because fewer viewers are watching as a result of the format being persistently degraded to attract the teen demographic ..... Last edited by Omah; 13-10-2011 at 12:08 AM. Reason: exp

Without dicks lke Jay, Anton, Sezer, Charly and co what would we be left with? Big Brother 4. Which is exactly the point the OP was making. BB4 had a bunch of likeable, non-argumentative housemates who most people would get along with just fine. Didn't make for great viewing though as reflected by the falling viewing figures throughout. The following year BB learns by their mistake, crams the house with a bunch of idiots and enjoys a continued rate of viewing figures as a result.

BB5 had a series average of 5.1 million BB6 had a series average of 4.6 million BB7 had a series average of 4.7 million BB8 had a series average of 3.9 million BB9 had a series average of 3.6 million BB10 had a series average of 2.5 million I would guess the series average for BB12 is about 1.7 million (and falling)

I think it's more down to the fact that the show's been long running, and people/demographics move on, and there's general apathy. Excepting news/current affairs, how many TV shows do u reckon last 12 seasons? i'd be guessing it's probably less than 1%..

Soaps rarely change channel, timeslot or cast though. And the long BB goes the more typical the characters end up being and everyone knows what to expect. Voting out the 'big characters' at the start shouldn't influence the rating that much if the producers are doing a good job. They need to add in more drama and shake things up. Opening up the votes to conversation last week did that.

But, just like a soap, BB only recently changed channel, stayed in the mid-evening timeslot and, as you say, "the more typical the characters end up being" ..... Last edited by Omah; 13-10-2011 at 04:35 AM. Reason: incl "a"

no the ratings have dropped over past few years because big brother started manipulating the whole show they tried to create storylines, tell us who to like and who to hate and send in brainless stereotypes as housemates instead of real people big brother keep on aiming at the wrong demographic, despite the fact the show is losing viewers each year, they are too stupid and too stubborn to change their approach they need to revert back to the original format fill the house with normal, INTERESTING people who actually engage in real conversations with each other (not ******* who talk about utter ****e 24/7) if the teeny bopper brigade are not interested in real people, real ADULT conversations and genuine social interactions, then **** EM

so many people keep saying that same old bull**** line of "lets keep the entertaining ones in" the true entertainment and drama does not come from any one individual housemate, it comes from the natural dynamics of the house and how ALL the housemates interact with each other and cope with the situations BB puts them in

There's a difference between people who are unlikeable and those who are just boring with few dimensions and probably not much intelligence to them.

To understand this, you have to understand our history. We are the country that used to wheel poor people through the streets so other poor people could throw moldy vegetables at them. We're the people who used to cheer when the kings men, would hang, draw and quarter someone. This is what we do. Our attention span as a collective, is so short, that we'd rather have half an hour of booing and jeering towards a house mate walking down the stairs, than keep them in and twist the screws on them and others around them, watching it all play out. We want a quick fix and we want it now. It's deeply routed in our psyche.

So you think BB's downfall is due to the public getting what they want have i summed up reasonably well? i.e public like the nice guy - He stays in - the trouble causers - who are exiting and entertaining - get voted out - turns into a snooze fest - same old year after year - 10 mil -9 mil - 8 mil - 2 mil. I agree, with that Trouble is The British Public can't stop themselves liking the nice guy. When we pick up the phone to vote we want to save Anton, but we end up saving Alex. I for one hope it remains that way, R.I.P BB & BBBots unfortunatly.

It depends what you classify as a bit character. For me the big characters this year (in order): Aaron, Mark, Rebeckah, Anton, Heaven. That's it.
