The pound is missing because you've taken it out of the equation. Split that pound between your parents, and £48.50 x 2 = £97. The problem arises when people who want free shirts, take part of the change.

If you borrowed £50 each from mum and dad and returned £1 to both of them, that means that all you borrowed from them is £49 each.
Okay 49+49= 98
You bought a shirt for 97 and kept 1 which still equals 98. So you see there's no missing pound because what you worked with is 98 because £2 was returned from the original 100pound.

Yeah, you've short changed your parents. Basically they have paid 48.50 each for your shirt at 97. So if you give them 1 back each and keep one for you, that one for you should be split by two (50 pence each) for your parents.

48.50+48.50=97

the pound back each:

97+1+1=99

Then add the pound you kept:

99+1=100

The 49 comes into play after you give them 1 each, not before.
