Dexter will end after its eighth season, it has been confirmed.

The news, which had long been touted but had not been officially announced, was revealed on the network's Facebook page along with a brand new sneak peek of the final run.

Jennifer Carpenter, who plays Dexter's foster sister Deb on the serial killer drama, told Digital Spy last year that she only planned to film eight seasons, while show exec Sara Colleton was also adamant that the show would not continue into a ninth year.

Lead star Michael C Hall has previously suggested that Dexter may not receive such a happy ending.

"I imagine Dexter is going to get caught one way or the other," he said. "And by that I mean, can we really expect him, at this point, to walk into the sunset? Or get off without a blemish on his conscience or character?"

Actors signed up to appear in the final season include Bethany Joy Lenz (One Tree Hill), Darri Ingolfsson (Last Resort), Nick Gomez (The Walking Dead), Sean Patrick Flanery (The Boondock Saints) and English actress Charlotte Rampling.

The new season is due to premiere on June 30 on Showtime in the US, while season seven is currently airing on FOX in the UK on Sundays at 9pm.

It was actually announced after season 6, that it would only carry on for 2 more seasons.

Is that the Miguel Prado season? That's probably the worst season out of the lot.

I HATED that series, I almost gave up on it but then my patience was rewarded with Season 4 <3.

I liked the Lumen series, It wasn't as good at the Trinity season obv but I thought it was pretty decent.

Can't believe I seem to be alone in thinking it was a horrible season. Apart from Roy, at least, and he's a hard man to please.

I guess I don't like it when he has partners. Doesn't feel as intimate watching someone else going through his routine with him. That needs to be strictly viewer/victim/Dexter. No one else.

I thought JLM was a crap character, and it feels like the show wanted big stars as baddies after the unbelievably good trinity season. Glad they left it behind though.

Season 8 stuff - don't read if you haven't seen season 7.

I hope Deb doesn't start getting involved in his kills for the last season. That would be a bad way for me to remember this amazing show.
