Default Doctor Who: Series 8 Infomation

Quote:
It was originally rumoured that Peter Capaldi’s debut series will not air until August 2014. Moffat then said that late Summer 2014 was “probably right.”

Today, in the Media Guardian’s 100 list, the section on Steven Moffat notes that Series 8 will not air until autumn 2014.

It states:

Doctor Who may not be quite the force it was when it returned with Christopher Eccleston and in its David Tennant heyday in the UK, but has a growing audience in the US on cable channel BBC America.

It will not return next year until the autumn, giving it plenty of time to recharge batteries. And what better way to do that than with a new Doctor?

With filming on the run not beginning until January 2014 and the usual nine month filming schedule, autumn always seemed more likely.

So once this year’s Christmas special has concluded, it seems that there will be more long waits. Hopefully with the payoff being no split this time. Although earlier rumours did point to the series being slightly reduced, with 12 episodes instead of 13.
At least there will be 13 episodes

What? It was my understanding Doctor Who is at it's biggest now, especially in the lead-up to the 50th.

Still not overly impressed with the selection of Capaldi.

I hope this isn't to facilitate the Americans ordinarily starting their seasons in the Autumn?

I would hate for the show to be adapted just to suit them.

I think it may be a money saving technique. Series splits are a very easy way to save yearly budgets.

I'd hope it's not just to suit an American audience. The BBC are quite well aware that it's still an important British show, even if it is getting popular overseas.

They've probably just seen that viewing figures haven't been that damaged by the series splits so they'll just continue with it for the foreseeable future.

I think S8 will be a full run of 13 episodes. I doubt there will be a split. They'd want Peter on show for as much as possible so people can take to him.

It's not a split though, they've seemingly just moved the show into the Autumn.

I think the previous splits were about budget though. I read they overspent in series 5 or something so had to split up series 6 and 7 so that they would be made through separate budgets further on in the year or something.

Then this year they had to retain money to make a 50th special.

Why do people no realise that Christopher Eccleston did not have any ambition to stay on Doctor Who beyond 1 series -- he only saw it as a job with an easy way out which he took for fear of typecasting

I didn't rate CE much anyway. He had some good stories and he was great but whatever. Didn't he have a massive fallout behind the scenes with producers and such? Think I read that somewhere.

The role of the Doctor is something you're gonna get typecast with. It's a major part to play. He doesn't really seem to give a toss for the show and declined returning for the 50th which of probably been John Hurts regeneration into 9.

Steven Moffat said he wanted to tick off the missing regenerations so unless CE is as big a liar as Paul McGann and is indeed in the 50th (which I doubt) then it looks as if we could have a double for CE filling in. That's if there is a regeneration into the ninth Doctor which is likely I think.

Speaking of regenerations, Steven Moffat has stated that he hasn't messed around with the numbering of the doctors. David is ten, Matt is eleven and Peter will be the twelfth. That means when Matt regenerates it will be the THIRTEENTH regeneration. He only has a cycle of twelve regenerations. An issue that will have to be resolved in the 50th or the Christmas Special.

In an interview with Broadcast, Moffat says they are committed to producing “at least” 13 episodes in 2014. Although, it is not clear if this includes the 2014 Christmas special or not. Earlier reports did suggest that Series 8 would be slightly reduced to 12 episodes as opposed to 13.
a full series
