Default Please can someeone explain something to me... (rant, incase you don't know me)

So I'm working at a school an hour away from my house and the drive is unbareable but at the end of the day, it's good money so I cant complain really.

But something I've noticed that I don't really understand is the lollipop people...

They stand in the middle of red lights and let children cross the road

i'm not being funny, but isn't that what the red light is for anyway...? Why do they need someone to hold up a giant ass STOP sign at a red ****ing light when NO ONE IS GOING TO GO ANYWAY?

it really pisses me off... do people think kids are retarded these days?

surely they have enough road sense to not cross a busy road and wait at a crossing until the light is red?

I can understand if there's no traffic light why you would need a lollipop person but jesus christ... at a traffic light? Is there anything more stupid or am I missing something?

These lollipop people are one of my pet hates as a driver. 8.40 everyone rushing to get to work for 9am, lights turn green, lollipop man/woman stands in the road and stops traffic to let kids cross.

Surely there is far more value in teaching children the green cross code.

I'm sure it is a power thing.

There is one near where I live, that is right outside a primary school, and in rush hour they, i'm sure are on some kind of power trip and love the fact they are ruling over peoples lives.

Children of that age should be taught to obey the green cross code, not follow some fat old man's instructions.

it because kids don't always think and can run out into the road as the light are changing

Good point, plus Lollipops are at risk at being run over and killed (and have been) by people who don't think they need to stop for a person. It also makes drivers think before zooming off as soon as the orange light flashes when kids are still crossing. It might seem OTT but better safe than sorry. I doubt its a power thing these people are usually elderly supplementing their pension by being out in all weathers, so unless they are stopping you when there is actually no one crossing then I doubt very much they are on a power trip Verbal :

Some drivers are less than conscientious and can't be trusted to stop when required or considerate enough to allow time out of their day to aid kids over the road.
Lollipops aren't there because kids can't cross, in many cases it's because they're not able to

Good point. Well made. Had not thought of it like that.

I have seen drivers going through the lights at the crossing outside the school round here before. I guess having a lollipop person makes them think twice or something...I'm sure its harder to run over a very visible person than to just lose your temper at the inconvenience of having to stop for a few seconds for schoolkids to cross and zooming on over the zebra crossing.

I imagine they're there for cyclists as well. I don't drive but I think I've seen on different occasions three or four cars go through red lights, whereas I've easily seen about thirty cyclists do that.

The irony of her working in a school whilst getting the urge to run kiddies over.

It should be legal to mow those bastards down to be honest. Biggest hazards on the roads by a long shot.

Whats with the random bump...?

But anyway, I can honestly say that in my 20 years of living and my 3 years of driving, I have never once seen someone go through a red light that had been stationary for a few seconds. Amber/red is different, but full on red, no.

Kids should be taught road safety and not rely on someone to hold up a stick for them. I can understand at difficult road junctions (as I already mention) but I think standing at traffic lights is one of the most pointless and stupid things I've ever heard of in my life.

As for the 'creating more jobs, not getting rid of them' argument... whats the point of keeping a pointless job? And I'm not saying GET RID OF ALL LOLLIPOP PEOPLE!!! Make them jobless!!!111 I'm just saying that it's totally stupid to have them at a traffic light.

You posted this on the 17th, today is the 21st, threads that are years old get bumped, I don't bother much during BB season with the off season threads so was just having a catch up, I have posted as well on another thread that interested me, so if you think I am following your posts or something I am not : , your paranoia is endless.

Incidentally, how can a job be "pointless" if it saves even one life?

this link is from 2008 but the trend of deaths on Zebra Crossings is not a diminishing one.

If you can find an article that proves that lollipop people AT traffic lights has helped saved lives then I'll admit I've seen the light and my thread is totally wrong...

but as i have said, this isnt about the people in general, its just about standing in front of a red light where the cars have already stopped
