The sentiment is heartwarming but - not to rain on the parade - but they could quite easily have made his injuries worse or ended up hurting someone else...

I don't know, all they could ever do with a bus like that is lift it a couple of inches to get him out, don't think they could have made it worse

I'd be more disconcerted over the guy who thought it reasonable to ride a unicycle down a busy London street

It's not the right thing, though, even officially... The highway code is quite clear about the fact that you should never move a road traffic accident victim unless they are in clear imminent danger. There can even be questions about it in the driving theory test. If you chose the "I'd move them" option, it would be the wrong answer!

There's a reason for it, though, if you don't know what you're doing you could kill or paralyse someone. It's different if you know no help is coming and have no choice, then you have to take the risk, but the emergency services would have been on the scene for this pretty quickly.

They could if they released pressure from a severed artery he'd bleed out... dragging him free could've also caused spinal injury but who cares they moved a bus!

From people's description of the injury it sounds like his leg was badly crushed (probably between the bus wheel and the bike - ouch). From one witness description in the link it sounds like he may well have lost his leg in hospital, unless they're exaggerating. For all the people knew, the pressure of the bus was all that was holding his leg together, and releasing him could have caused him to bleed to death in seconds via the major femoral artery. Alternatively, even the artery was fine at this point, they could have lifted it an inch but then slipped before he was free and severed the artery themselves. And then yes there's always the risk of spinal injury, although it may have been obvious that it was just his leg that was crushed (from the pictures and descriptions of his injury).

Basically... Yes it sounds like the man was in agony, but unless his life was in immediate danger (e.g. If it looked like he was already bleeding out and there was no way to stop the bleeding without moving him) then they should have waited for an ambulance to assess his injury and the fire service to jack up the bus...

Makes a less interesting story, though .
