A 13-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of the murder after a man was fatally stabbed in a street confrontation.

The teen suspect is being held in custody, according to Essex Police.

Darren Kelly, 42, staggered to a block of flats seeking help after being stabbed in Basildon on Tuesday.

Residents fought to save his life but the lorry driver later died in hospital.

The girl is the fifth person to detained over his killing.

A 20-year-old man, 17-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl, all from Pitsea, and a 16-year-old boy from Basildon have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody, police said.

A 13-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a man who was stabbed to death after a confrontation with a group of young people in Essex.

Residents fought to save Darren Kelly, 42, from Basildon, after he staggered to a block of flats in Caister Drive at about 9.30pm on Tuesday to find help. It is thought that Kelly, a father-of-one who lived two miles away in Voysey Gardens, was stabbed in an alleyway that runs behind the street.

One resident reported that he rang on all of the flat buzzers before a woman answered and came to his aid.

Paramedics and an air ambulance arrived at the scene and Kelly was taken to hospital, where he later died. A postmortem examination revealed the provisional cause of death to be multiple stab wounds and blood loss. Police said they believed Kelly had been involved in an altercation with about five youths or young men.

The 13-year-old girl, from Basildon, was taken into custody. She joins a 16-year-old boy, also from Basildon, and a 20-year-old man, 17-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl, all from Pitsea, who were arrested on suspicion of murder on Wednesday night, Essex police said.
