Default Big Brother 2017 housemates clash over whether women should pay for dates

It follows this week's nominations twist where housemates had to avoid losing games to keep themselves safe from eviction.

Isabelle and Sam lost one of the games but there was a twist when Big Brother told the pair: "Sam and Isabelle, your job is now simple.

"You must decide between yourselves which one of you should face eviction this week. You have five minutes to make your decision."

As the other housemates watched on, Isabelle immediately put herself forward. Sam didn't disagree and his apparent inaction in response to Isabelle's decision didn't go unnoticed by the group.

They turned on him when the pair returned to the main house with Simone suggesting his actions were somehow sexist.

"You're no man!" she snapped, "You've no respect towards women!"

Today in the house, the fallout continued when Sam dared to confess he would let a woman pay for a date.

Ellie took charge and declared she would train Sam on how to act properly with girls.

"I'm teaching Sam to be better on dates," she told the house, "I'm going to be his trainer.

"He'd let the girl pay for the meal. It's bad, isn't it?"

"Why would you do that?!" Sue quizzed Sam.

Sam defended himself to the girls, explaining: "I didn't ask, she said 'I'll pay for it'."

"This is ******ing s**t," declared Ellie.

"She didn't text me back," Sam reflected. "That was it for that one. Yeah, I didn't get a reply back."

I saw the video it's actually quite funny. They're more or less taking the piss out of Sam.

That is such an archaic viewpoint though. Feminism is supposed to be about equality, you can't have it both ways.

Yeah the ridiculous 'you should have taken the eviction, you are a man!!!' is a ridiculous sexist reason tbh. Was shocked to hear it last night, and have been shocked over the course of the day with many forum members repeating this and agreeing. What on earth does their sex have to do with it

I hate this idea that men should always pay on dates too. Why?

I wouldn't say that Sam has no respect towards women. It's just annoying how easily he agreed to Isabelle putting herself up for eviction. There could have been a longer discussion rather than him just taking the easy road.

It's just old fashioned chivalry/gentlemanly conduct etc.

Some women like it, some don't.

It's done out of respect for women, but some people choose to see it as sexist or unequal. The kind of men who pay for dates etc are usually the more respectful kind of men who want to demonstrate care and consideration to women, which is a good thing.

It's a debatable point for sure. Some people can see it as a compliment and a sign of a caring gentleman, others choose to see it as a sexist act which is being a bit harsh and ungrateful in the face of kindness IMO.

I was also completely shocked. I was the only FM that seemed to disagree with Simone on the highlights thread. I just couldn't understand that anyone could agree that Sam should have volunteered to go up just because he was a man. Seems just sexist.

Yeah i agree with that, my husband paid for our first dinner date, I'm a pretty independent woman and I always like to pay my way but I could tell that it was our first date and he wanted t feel like he did things properly if you know what I mean? so I let him (I did offer to split the bill though) But after that I made sure we took things in turns, I would feel uncomfortable if someone else was paying my way all the time, it's not how I was raised or raise my children to be

Oh don't get me wrong, I do think its a nice gesture, though personally I would argue to split the bill I don't blame people for letting the guy pay. Especially as many guys would take it as an insult if the girl wouldn't let them pay

I just think how its expected...and how guys get slagged for wanting to split (or even, gasp, let the girl pay if she wants to) is really wrong.

Simone deffo shouldn't have brought gender into it since men and women are the same but as a human being he should have also offered.

It's all old fashioned still in 2017! both should be pay for days, like i always said that too and females can propose too it shouldn't be all men (forget the leap year rule crap)

This is probably just because people don't like Sam and like Isabelle tbh. So many will overlook blatantly wrong things as they dislike/like the person involved.

Well I'd agree with "old fashioned". Why is it necessary if people supposedly want true gender equality?

Thankfully it's not a double standard I'll have to deal with since I'm gay but if I wasn't, I'd have an issue with automatically being expected to foot the whole bill just because I'm a guy and it doesn't make me any less respectful of women than those who are perfectly happy to pay the whole thing (I also don't really see it as a true barometer of how respectful of women a man is). I think it's perfectly fine for people who want to do it, I just don't agree with this silly social expectation and the judgement on people who don't think it's necessary.

I absolutely see myself as a gentleman because I treat anyone I meet with respect, but I don't think I need to add an extra level of effort for women in particular.

I didn't see anyone agree to the be a man comment not sure

but it's more of a decent human being moral type thing. If Isabelle let Sam took it then i would lose a little bit respect for her.

Pretty much

Unless the date was completely organized by the guy as a surprise, in that case it would make sense for him to pay it all.

I get people being pissed he didn't fight but I have seen 2 people on here today specifically run with the 'be a man' reasoning. As if being a male means he wants to win any less. If anything, if we are stereotyping, being a man would make one more competitive, not less

Edit. Actually just seen another in another thread, that you agreed with http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/foru...9&postcount=31 . Not specifically saying he should go as he is a man, but heavily implying it with the 'he could have insisted on letting the woman stay' part

Its just pretty silly reasoning. Man/woman is neither here nor there.

Well that is wrong for them to do that of course and i agree with you, I also remember when Arthur said Kayleigh wasn't a woman and some people agreed with that which is more stereotyping and a woman and a man don't have to act like that way. it's 2017

oh mess, I didn't really see the woman bit i just agree with the Raph thing, other people should have pressed it and Sam should have offered too.

oh mess, I didn't really see the woman bit i just agree with the Raph thing, other people should have pressed it and Sam should have offered too.
I didn't hear him say that even at the time I know thats what she said he had said, but I thought he had called her a **** or something and she had taken it the wrong way. What on earth did he mean she wasnt as woman?! What an odd thing to say

God, looking back on that...they were all so shocked that the C word had been used. Then a week or so later it was the most used word in the house
