A youtuber in Scotland wanted to annoy his girlfriend so he taught his dog nazism as a joke. The video went viral and he subsequently was arrested. Here the video that police claim was a hate crime.

Meh. I didn't find it all that funny but not because of the gazdijuse. It just wasn't a very funny video...

It's sure as **** not a hate crime though - no moreso than countless episodes of South Park / Family Guy etc. Again it's up to the viewer whether or not they find it funny, BUT you don't see the creators being arrested for "hate crimes".

Or is there a difference when the content is "amateur"?

Me too Smudgie it too ages for the penny to drop I can understand why he was arrested, It was more to with his attitude and his promotion of anti semitism on the net, more than teaching the dog what was essentially give me the paw I hope his girlfriend dumped him

it's a case of overzealous policing that won't make it to prosecution because it isn't really hate speech.

Hate speech convictions should be reserved for people who endorse and preach violence againsts groups of people. It shouldn't be used to punish views we find difficult to stomach because society will do that anyway. He'll lose his job, will probably find it difficult to find specialised work for years to come and it's going to have an effect on his relationships with other people, Society will punish him enough.

This man's ruined his life and he deserves it but it's not a police matter.

It has now emerged that Meechan was arrested on April 28 at his house in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. He was subsequently released pending further investigations.

Detective Inspector David Cockburn of Lanarkshire CID said: “This clip was shared online and has been viewed almost one million times.

“I would ask anyone who has had the misfortune to have viewed it to think about the pain and hurt the narrative has caused a minority of people in our community.

“The clip is deeply offensive and no reasonable person can possibly find the content acceptable in today’s society.

“This arrest should serve as a warning to anyone posting such material online, or in any other capacity, that such views will not be tolerated.”

What an annoying interviewer I think he kinda missed the point as well, I wonder how he would have taken it if the guy was chanting "fly planes into buildings" over and over, haven't the Americans arrested people for joking about in airports about bombs

If you joke about that kind of thing at an airport I think there is a real possibility that you may be arrested but this is a different subject. Here a man is for comedy purposes teaching his dog to appear as a Nazi in the comforts of his own home and posts the video on an American website. It should be obvious to the most dim-witted person that he clearly is not advocating violence and even makes a point to say he is not a racist.

Popular speech does not need protection. Freedom of Speech is there to protect UNPOPULAR speech. Cherie, you can argue that this might hurt someone's feelings but I doubt you could argue that this will likely lead to violence.
