Mars will be just 35.8 million miles (57.6 million kilometres) from Earth tonight
The red planet will appear bigger and brighter than usual in the night sky tonight
Mars is visible to the naked eye, but those with telescopes will get the best view
Known as 'perihelic opposition', the phenomenon occurs when Mars reaches its closest point to the sun at the same time as the Earth is lined-up between the two

We shelled out Ł400 on a telescope a couple of years ago and the only interesting thing I managed to see was Jupiter . The solar system is so rubbish.

Very clear, loads of stars tonight, no moon though

When Mars and Earth are close to each other, Mars appears very bright in our sky. It also makes it easier to see with telescopes or the naked eye. The Red Planet comes close enough for exceptional viewing only once or twice every 15 or 17 years.
