Czech Republic beat Spain 3-2
![]() Stepanek rolled back the years in that final rubber. Played like a top 20 player again. And CZE become the first country to win all three team competitions in the same year (and an Olympic doubles silver). Always nice to see Vaidisova in the audience too (even if I'd prefer to see her on the court). Great ending to a great season. |

Urgh, after a quick search I see that Vaidisova is only a few months older than Azarenka. What a career she could/should have had. Top 20 at 16, top 10 at 17, retired at 19. What a waste.

I remember Benoît Assou-Ekotto saying the same thing a few years back, he had no interest in football or he has no love for it and he only plays for the money

Organisers say Serena Williams will take part in this month’s Brisbane International tennis tournament despite undergoing minor surgery on her problematic feet.
The 15-time Grand Slam winner has withdrawn from an exhibition match in Thailand following the surgery but Brisbane International tournament director Cameron Pearson says he’s been assured by Williams’ agent that the superstar will compete at Pat Rafter Arena. “She’ll be fit and ready for Brisbane,” Pearson told AAP on Thursday. “She just needed a little bit more time than what the Thailand exhibition match gave her to be ready. “I guess it’s a bit of a compliment that she wants to tailor her preparation around playing Brisbane.” Time for Vika to take advantage of the weak and vulnerable Serena

![]() Rafael Nadal will miss Australian Open as virus hits injury recovery Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from next month's Australian Open because his recovery from a persistent knee injury has been hampered by a stomach virus. Former world number one Nadal, 26, has suffered from tendonitis in his left knee since losing in the second round of Wimbledon in June. The injury forced the Spaniard, who has won 11 Grand Slam events, to withdraw from both London 2012 and the US Open. He also pulled out of an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi on 27 December. "My knee is much better and the rehabilitation process has gone well, as predicted by the doctors, but this virus didn't allow me to practise this past week," Nadal said in a statement. "Therefore I am sorry to announce that I will not play in Doha and the Australian Open, as we had initially scheduled." Nadal, who won the Australian Open in 2009, also withdrew from this year's ATP World Tour Finals in London. The world number four had announced on Tuesday on his Facebook page that he had been advised to rest while he recovers from a fever caused by the stomach infection. Nadal said it was a difficult decision to pull out of his third consecutive Grand Slam through injury. "You need your body to be at its best for the Australian Open," he told the Australian Open website. "It was a difficult decision and I am extremely disappointed to be missing such a great event." The left-hander now hopes to return at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel event in Acapulco which starts on 25 February. "It hurts to have to wait another 12 months before I get another chance [but] in the meantime, the focus is now on desperately trying to get back on the tour," he said. Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said: "It is completely understandable and we really feel disappointed for him." |

Served up an OBE: Andy Murray honoured in the Queen's New Year list Scotland's tennis star follows up Olympic and US Open titles with an OBE on the Queen's New Year Honours list Olympic and US Open champion Andy Murray has been awarded an OBE in the Queen's New Year Honours following a year to remember for the Scottish tennis superstar. The 25-year-old was one of a host of sporting stars to receive honours as part of a special list rewarding British athletes who excelled at the London Olympics and Paralympics. Murray went into the Games still looking to win one of tennis' biggest titles after falling just short at Wimbledon in July. The Scot reached the final for the first time, ending a 74-year wait for a home men's singles finalist, but was beaten in four sets by Roger Federer. Murray reacted in superb fashion, though, beating Novak Djokovic to guarantee himself a first Olympic medal and then handing Federer his worst defeat on grass to clinch gold in the men's singles on Wimbledon's Centre Court. Murray almost made it two gold medals on the same day but had to settle for silver in the mixed doubles with Laura Robson. The hope was the success would spur him on to break his grand slam duck, and he did just that at the first opportunity by winning the US Open in New York. The Wimbledon final was the fourth slam showpiece Murray had lost but he matched coach Ivan Lendl in winning at the fifth time of asking with a five-set victory over Djokovic. Murray revealed after his triumph that his friends had been teasing him about the possibility of a knighthood - something he definitely was not expecting. The world number three said: "A lot of my friends have been messaging me about it and I don't really know what to say. I think it should take more than one or two good tournaments to deserve something like that. It would probably be a bit rash." The OBE is the first honour Murray, who survived the school shooting in his home town of Dunblane as a child, has received. ![]() |

Think he's got a pretty good chance of winning the Australian Open but he can never seem to beat Djokovic and he looks like he's on form at the minute judging from his match with Ferrer so i'd still put him as a strong favorite

Novak wins.
Don't even know why Almagro was chosen as the replacement, perhaps he was already in Abu Dhabi at the time. |
