Because a knock on the door doesn't quite have the same 'oomph' - and isn't as easy to hear as the very distinctive rattling of the letterbox?

Perhaps their knuckles are sore from all the others doors they've knocked on?

I have a doorbell. One of those infared ones that you plug in. I don't have it plugged in...so that makes for good fun !!!

Bloody letterboxes. years ago the postie forced something that was really too large: broke it.

When I contacted the P.O., they said buy a new one and we'll refund you, but you will need to actually replace it yourself.

Kinda like being in a car accident and the Insurance company saying: go buy a new wing and bonnet, we'll reimburse you, but you'll need to fit it yourself.
