Default In the whole immigration debate does anyone else notice that...

...one of the points advocates for more immigration make is so racist? They say that we need the minorities to come because they will do the work that we aren't willing to do. If you stop and think about it that's one of the most racist things one could say: we have too much class to do those labor-intensive jobs for cheap wages so we need to bring in people from countries who are more content with that being their lot in life.

This point was mentioned in the "My Tram Experience" video in another thread. It's always boggled my mind that in a such a race sensitive society, someone can say we need to bring them in because they'll do the work that we're not willing to do without ever being accused of saying something racist. I personally think that the reason why this point is never thought of as racist is because it's made in the context of wanting MORE of them in the country. Yet, to me, it is racist. Anyone care to agree or disagree?

Yeah it is a bit contentious. I'd say it's more condescending or prejudiced than racist, but I suppose that's just splitting hairs.

Isn't prejudice and racism the same thing?

I think it's a valid argument, people emigrate to the West generally because their home country is nowhere near as prosperous financially, because living standards are lower and because it's poorer, so they emigrate to try and earn a decent living and provide for themselves and so are therefore more motivated to take any work they can get, and they also arguably have a very different perspective where compared to what they might be making back in their home country the minimum wage here is good pay and so will take any job that will pay that

It is a valid argument, yet I don't think you quite get the point I'm trying to make.

I totally disagree.

There are people from other countries who are willing to work hard at jobs many people here in the UK think are 'beneath them' - because too many of them are too used to getting a free ride, or having parents who have cossetted them - or indeed, are happy to sign on the dole and have their 'on the side jobs' - whilst having housing costs paid, council tax paid, free dental work etc.

Some don't know what a hard day's graft is: or simply are not prepared to do a hard day's graft for the wages being offered.

Speaking as someone who had 2 positions to be filled - having given initial precedence to UK residents - they proved themselves to be utter work shy, unable to work without being constantly micro-managed, were more interested in sneaking in mobile phones to spend time on that rather than work and had thought that work was some extension of a school playground - and as soon as the 'hometime bell' was rung, they were out quicker than a rat up a drainpipe. Zero committment, motivation or desire to get on through their sheer hard work.

I brought in two Polish men - and the difference was like night and day. Enthusiatic, keen, hard working, respectful, responsible - and they put their UK born and bred counterparts to utter shame with their zest for actually enjoying work.

No surprises for who were given the perm positions.

Are you thinking of positive Liberty and negative Liberty by chance?

Don't think so, it's definitely something different.

It comes across that that is more where the OP is coming from (the way I'm reading their OP) and that is being intertwined with the racism aspect (or not as the OP sees it).

It's the truth. It's not about race, but about culture.

Employers are seldom interested in emplyees. They are are more interested in "slaves". Employers call them hard workers which is code for a bloody good slave to do a lot for as little as possible.......

Yes there are lazy gits who don't want work while benefits are on stream. Blame the parents. Blame the government of the day for being bone bloody idle themselves and not kicking the lazy gits up the jacksy and make them take jobs.

Employers laugh all the way to the bank with foreign workers. Employers generaly don't have to provide them with housing........Nah poor emloyer subsidising rate payer pays that bill.........Not to mention of course the money they send back home instead of spending it here and generate the economy that has given them work.......

The true cost of foreign workers gratifying employers as they laugh all the way to the bank is astronomical to our society.

I've noticed this before. And i've also noticed, the same people that use the excuse "they do the work we don't wanna do" then they also want us to pay for them to get college educations...

Well if they are here to clean toilets and pick cabbage, why do they need a college education???
