Default English Parliament/Assembly

It's only just struck me that England doesn't have a devolved Parliament/Assembly like all the other constituent nations of the UK?

Shouldn't England be given one too? I mean it would even things out a bit. I don't understand why we don't have one yet..

I've always thought we should have one really, people say it's unncessary because so much of the UK's political power is concentrated in England anyway but I do think there should be some form of assembly to decide on matters which only relate to England

Our parliament is primarily concerned with England anyway, so not sure whether we'd need another one.

I am not sure I want to see another level of Govt in the UK, England is the so called 'Mother' nation of the UK so on paper, the other devolved Govts and powers to the other Countries have been a sort of pacification process.

However, had the cut in MPs at Westminster happened,it is not likely to now, then maybe that cut could have been larger than just 50 MPs and then have some English assembly but hopefully I wouldn't want to see no more extensions of Govt and the cost all that entails.

What the others said. The parliament is concentrated in England primarily so there's not much need for one.

I don't think it's fair that politicians from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland get to vote on things - often having a decisive say - on things that affect only England, while English politicians have no say at all on things that affect Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

scotland votes on laws in wales but wales doesnt vote on laws in scotland so the unfairness affects wales too. i dont think the english and welsh arethat bothered about it to be honest. the main concern is the fact so many laws are made by those free loaders in brussels

This. I've always thought it to be weird that they can vote in decisions that affect England but we have no say. It's unequal to say the least.

I think it's weird how we have this odd semi-federal system in this country anyway.

Actually, the English are generally tired of footing the bill for free prescriptions, free higher education, free care for the elderly in oether parts of the UK, while the English themselves have to pay for all those things. It's a well-known fact that more money is spent per capita in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland than is spent per capita in England. If the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish want their own assemblies, then that's fine with me. But English people need to have a voice too. The current situation can't go on.

Your facts are simply wrong. I suggest you look them up again. Also check out the barnett formula. However I do agree that the poorer areas in Scotland, wales and northern england are too reliant on the state. However one of the underlying reasons for this is the destruction of industry in these areas. Plus the fact over 20 towns and villages in Wales have been drowned in the past 200 years to build reservoirs and provide free water for england.
we brits also share the considerable spolis of the scots north sea oil, plus we get vast quantities of gas delivered at milford haven and tunnelled beneath the brecon beacons direct to england. scratch the surface of these issues and the truth is a whole lot more complex.

With anyone else, I'd be willing to have a conversation about this, especially the bits where you're painfully wrong. But it'll turn into a bunfight and I'll end up putting you on ignore again. As for your advising me what to look up, if I ever need advice from you, it'll be about somethere you know about. Renting a van, for instance.

Well said Livia and I agree with what you are getting at, as I said above,I could support an English Assembly for want of another description if a cut of the number of MPs were made as to Westminster to make way for it.

You make a strong case definately for one by what you have said on this thread.

take a dpper look at these issues. the english elite have gotten fat off the backs of the poor industrial regions and countries of the UK. The current system is a mess but its an attempt to progressively move forward the UK constitution and redress the enormous financial imbalance between england and the rest. you also need to dig a little deeper and understand as a result of the United kingdom, the welsh and scots have supplied billions of tons of free water, free north sea oil, free welsh gold to the english crown and the english economy. the welsh northern english and scots also provided the coal, the copper to bottom out the ship and the cannonballs too....where would brunel have been without these industrial workers? the coal men, the quarrymen, the steelworkers, bridgebuilders and the shipbuilders? this nation and the empire and all the riches came from the blood sweat and tears of these men from these parts of the country.

now that weve decimated their industries is it fair and proper we now disown? these areas have been destroyed , millions of jobs lost as well as health and prosperity and people are working hard to try and redress this imbalance. is it right after their loyal service to the united kingdom we now disown them now theyve come across hard times?
