A few hundred thousand votes on a cult reality TV show is no reflection on the whole of society

Besides, a girl that breaks so many sexist stereotypes (God love her <333) winning is hardly some kind of immoral result...she isn't a murderer

It is a pointer to what is regarded as not just acceptable but positively desirable in British society and what is worthy of reward.

Course it is !

Don't worry Jack, you'll be stuck with your boring entertainers next year.
Hope you enjoy weighing up who can fart and swear the most.
RIP Ginxster wannabees.

It has been a tragic night for Britain...not just the winner but the huge support for that winner, it worries me too.

If your worries for the country boil down to the winner of Big Brother then you need to get caught up on world affairs.

This, exactly. It's utterly ridiculous. I bet the people who believe this are the same ones who genuinely believe that the recession is because of benefits claimants and immigrants . The problems in Britain, in the whole western world, start at the TOP - not the bottom.

Even if this wasn't true, do you really think kids like Charlotte or her fans are the ones drinking MD20/20 in the street with 6 inch blades in their back pockets? Do you think they're the muggers, the violent criminals, or the tragic heroin addicts that litter every small town centre? Do you really think that THIS is "broken britain"?? If you do, I'm sorry but you really need to get off your couch and have a look around. Our society has deep, deep, festering problems but girls like Charlotte farting are not one of them . Kids like charlotte grow up and become normal people, with normal jobs, and normal families. But because her behaviour makes people uncomfortable, theyre inexplicably managing to twist it into something immoral or indicative of societal problems.

I'm 28 and I can literally look back 7/8 years to University and think of 4 girls I knew just like Charlotte (worse, in some cases) who are now: a doctor, a lawyer, a civil engineer, and a dentist. All on 50k+ salaries and "contributing to society" in ways that most people who would have branded them "products of broken Britain" never will. Not that job titles or salaries even matter. The point is, they are functional people having fun while theyre young. The fact that people want to brand this "immoral" is really, really sad.

Brilliant post.

I only have to look back to my day, nothing much has changed, girls AND boys have always drank too much took part in toilet humour and enjoyed sex.
That was 40 yeas ago..only difference is we did not have reality TV etc so it was not so much in your face.
We all turned out ok in the end

Except there is a huge difference between the two despite their being some similarities when drunk I'm guessing?
The girls in your scenario by charlottes age had finished or were in the latter stages of university. They could hold their bladder sufficiently, conduct conversations adequately and during disagreements could express themselves without swearing and crying?
Where I live 'kids' like charlotte go on to have kids like charlotte, not many of them become reality TV stars.
Anyone who was honest with themselves could not say they would be happy with the thought of their child exhibiting those behaviours.

The only part - and I say this in all honesty as a dad of 2 girls - that I wouldn't like so much is the being unable to be in a heated discussion without breaking down. But that us 100% down to her struggling to cope with frustration and anger. I would blame myself in that case.

The rest of it? No i would have no problem with my daughters being like that at 23. At 30? Maybe. But 23 is just a baby! I know "society" has a ridiculous expectation that anyone over 18 (or 21) should be a fully fledged "adult at all times" but its utter nonsense. Let the girl be young.

I'd be horrified if I had a daughter that went on national TV telling everyone she'd had a cock up every orifice, and talking about sucking off her boyfriend. Charlotte was all about the shock factor and likes to talk about chit, thats something I may expect from a 16 year old. At 23 years old I would expect more maturity, 23 is young but certainly not a baby.

I agree fully that there's an awful lot more problems in the world to keep us occupied, but at this point in time we're debating a TV show, and whether Charlotte is a product of society? Obviously it's not her job to set a good example,if she doesn't want to,but some people will follow her example, while others will be dismayed!
However,as regards the girls you knew in uni, there's a huge difference. They were studying in order to get qualifications to pursue their chosen careers, and obviously from time to time would let off steam!?! This is Charlotte's life, and with due respect,I can't imagine her heading to uni in the near future. She seems nice enough, when she's not performing, but when performing, she's cringe-worthy!!

still important to denounce her vile behaviour as a dreadful example to the millions of impressionable people who follow her as a role model

Yep!....This is a very black day for the great british public's decency reputation!

....I knew it was coming, but tried to keep my faith in the viewer's in-built morality code!...and now just look what happened! ....I shan't sleep well tonight!

It is just too funny to even begin to think you can judge society because some girl that breaks wind and wets her bed when drunk wins BB.
