Default do you want to live to an old age?

Having this conversation with my mate the other week as we had both been sorting out our wills. She said she thought Id live to an old age. I said I didn't really want to live past 70. Most people seem to detariate (sp) about 70 to 80 years old.
my maternal grandparents gran lived till she was 96! granddad I think was just about 60 maybe younger.
my paternal grandparents I think were both 70s.
father 64
mother 78 when they all died.

If I am in possession of my faculties and independence I won't care how old I am. I would hate to be a burden though...

My grandad is still alive at 96 and lives in his own house
My nan died at 93

My other nan is still alive (and getting married) at 84
My grandad died at 76 (smoking related)

I seem to have pretty strong genes if the above are anything to go by...

..wow, that's a deep question for a Sunday morning Mizzy, but strangely I thought about it recently as well...I went to the coast for the day in the summer with my OH and there was an older couple sitting on a bench by the sea eating fish and chips and just chatting and smiling..and I thought 'that's how I want to be'...just growing old with the love of my life...but I don't think I like the idea of growing old on my own..so I guess the answer is that I want to live as long as he does and no longer...but that does depend on health because I would never want him to become a carer or anything or my children to either....

Yes I would, as long as I had my wits about me still and was in reasonable health.

Hell yeah, life is precious, but as Joey says I would like to be in full control of myself.I don't want my kids or hubby to end up looking after me if I was in a position not to.I am so looking forward to seeing my children grow up marry etc,and spending those years with my husband is really comforting.

I am more concerned how I die than when.

I would like to live to a ripe old age, just as long as I am if and well enough to look after myself.

I am really looking forward to hubby and I having time for ourselves as we get older.

I'd like to live as long as possible providing I'm of sound mind and in reasonable health. My Dad is 80 and fit as a fiddle, my Mum is 81 and while she has sound mind her legs aren't what they used to be but she seems happy and never grumbles and enjoys life. My Grandma lived until she was 91 and was always fit and well, she died after a short illness. Should I become ill with Cancer or a debilitating illness then I wouldn't want to hang on to become a burden to anyone.

I haven't got any kids and for some reason I think my partner will die before me. I hope I die a quick death as well something like a heart attack Id hate to have a horrible illness like cancer or motor neurones. A friend of mine died last week after just being diagnosed this time last year with motor neurone. God it is a horrible disease. She was 73 when she died but before she was diagnosed she was fit and healthy and never looked her age then over the last year deteriated rapidly to the point where she could barely speak and couldn't even swallow properly.

No I don't unless I am fit and healthy.Of course without legal euthanasia we are all stuck with ill health, if it happens. Having nursed and subsequently had to resort to nursing homes for a parent and an in law, that would be a living hell for me. Having in my younger days, with children, being literally terrified of death I am in now in my sixties and don't care when I die. Never thought I would reach this age.

How very sad! I am sorry. I think believing our partner will die before us is fairly common and a fear of how we will cope with such a devastating loss.I lost my first husband when we were both 27 , terrible, but went on, with three children to bring up, to remarry 10 years later. We have been happily together(most of the time!)for 23 years.I dread the thought of losing him!!

Yes, none of this 'live fast, die young' rubbish, take it easy and enjoy and a long and uneventful old age

I want to live to a reasonable age, but I also would still want to be able to do things for myself or else life wouldn't really be worth it and I don't like being dependent on other people entirely.

I would want to live to an old age just so I can say that I've seen a lot in the world and all it's changes from when I was younger.

Oh god no. I'm hoping for a speedball-related death at 30 or maybe even 35 if I stay relatively wrinkle-free. I'm 19 and already wallowing in a mid-life crisis about turning 20 in a couple months so I can't even imagine my reaction to turning 30 or 40.
